Israel pushes assault several miles into Rafah

CAIRO, May 10 (Reuters) -

The United Nations warned on Friday that aid for the Gaza Strip could grind to a halt in days, as Israeli troops took their ground war with Palestinian fighters into the crowded city of Rafah, a key aid corridor for the famine-threatened strip.

Israeli tanks captured the main road dividing the eastern and western sections of Rafah, effectively encircling the eastern part of the city in an assault that has caused Washington to block some military aid to its ally.

Hamas said it ambushed Israeli tanks near a mosque in the east of the city, a sign the Israelis had penetrated several kilometres from the east to the outskirts of the built-up area.

Israel has ordered civilians out of the eastern half of Rafah, forcing tens of thousands of people to seek shelter outside the city, previously the last refuge of more than a million who fled other parts of the enclave during the war.

Israel says it cannot win the war without assaulting Rafah to root out thousands of Hamas fighters it believes are sheltering there. Hamas says it will fight to defend it. Aid agencies say the battle puts hundreds of thousands of already displaced civilians in harm's way.

"It is not safe, all of Rafah isn't safe as tank shells landed everywhere since yesterday," Abu Hassan, 50, a resident of Tel al-Sultan west of Rafah told Reuters via a chat app.

"I am trying to leave but I can't afford 2,000 shekels to buy a tent for my family," he said. "There is an increased movement of people out of Rafah even from the western areas, though they were not designated as red zones by the occupation.

"The army is targeting all of Rafah not only the east with tank shells and air strikes."

Good, Get Some! From the river to the sea!

Let’s hope the IDF kills them all before Biden airlifts them here.

Let's see how the WH tries to spin this. They're really trying hard to play both sides of the fence but Israel, by action, just told Biden to pound sand.

Exactly. They have no war machine to return to. They no longer have the infrastructure nor the terrorist government to attack Israel and start destructive wars.

The more pertinent question is what the people of Gaza plan to do with that. One can only hope they turn towards building a peace-loving society with good relations with its neighbors.
You think?

Many people are wondering, what is Israel's end game?

And where do the survivors go?

A U.N. staff member employed by the U.N. Department of Safety and Security was killed while traveling in a U.N. vehicle from Rafah to the European Hospital in the southwest corner of Khan Younis, according to a statement Monday by Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the secretary general. Another U.N. staffer was injured in the attack.

Haq confirmed that the staff member was the first international U.N. casualty since the beginning of the conflict on Oct 7. The name and nationality of the staff member have not been released. The United Nations did not say who they believed was responsible for the attack.

“An initial inquiry … indicates that the vehicle was hit in an area declared an active combat zone,” said a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces, who added that the IDF had not been made aware of the route of the vehicle. The spokesperson said “the incident is under review.”

Haq told The Washington Post that “we inform the Israeli side of the movement of all our convoys. They are all clearly marked U.N. vehicles.”

Video footage captured in front of the emergency department of the European Hospital — where the injured U.N. worker is reportedly receiving medical treatment — showed the aftermath of Monday’s attack. Bullet holes are visible in the rear windows of a white van with U.N. lettering stamped across the trunk and front doors of the vehicle — and a U.N. flag staked above the gas hub.
