This cable car company should be sued and fined out of existence.

ROME (AP) — Police arrested three people Wednesday in the cable car disaster that killed 14 people in northern Italy, saying an investigation showed a clamp, intentionally placed on the brake as a patchwork repair, prevented the brake from engaging after the lead cable snapped.

Carabinieri Lt. Col. Alberto Cicognani said at least one of the three people questioned overnight admitted to what happened. He said the fork-shaped clamp had been placed on the emergency brake to deactivate it because the brake was engaging spontaneously and preventing the funicular from working.

The clamp was put on several weeks ago as a temporary fix to prevent further service interruptions in the cable car line bringing sightseers to the top of the Mottarone peak overlooking Lake Maggiore. It was still in place on Sunday morning, Cicognani told Sky TG24

Grease those cables with moly-coat grease. High temp and low temp. A single fray in the cable starts the disaster. Run your bare hands on the cable to find the fray.

Safety devices are there for a reason
Especially in a Cable Car like that one

Safety devices can't find a fray. When the cable parts, down you go. An elevator car goes up when the cable fails due to safety devices, does that make it better?

Bossi said it still wasn’t clear why the lead cable broke or whether it was related to the brake problem. But she said that the intentional deactivation of the brake, done several times over recent weeks for a persistent problem, prevented the brake from doing its job when the cable snapped.

Who would be so irresponsible?

A lot of variables there...weight of the cable vs weight of the car...where the cable parted...strength of the support towers...

...but as a general rule when falling...some resistance is better than no resistance and hitting the ground at an angle is better than straight down.

You could be right...it might have made no difference...but it may have made all the difference.

I'm glad to see that the laws might be enforced. Imagine KNOWING your loved one might have been saved but for this decision made for the bottom line.

Cable cars are extremely safe unless there's intentional negligence, as in this case. Those involved need to be sent to jail immediately and this company dissolved.

Things like this are done more often than anyone could imagine. You can bet that the upper management knew about this and it was done with their silent approval. In the end, a foreman will probably end up taking the rap and all the greedy management bastards who did this to save money for the company will skate.

An entire Jewish family was killed except for one boy
Absolutely a horrible backwards nation - Is Italy
