WHITE PAPER HINDERED RESCUE.
BEN-GURION ATTACKS PALESTINE POLICY

LONDON , Monday (Palcor). — A review of the present position of Zionism and the Jewish people , in the course of which he severely criticized the continuation of the White Paper policy as contrary to the pledge given to the Jewish people, was given yesterday by the Chairman of the Jewish Agency Executive Mr . D . Ben-Gurion, in addressing a crowded meeting at the Anglo-Palestine Club in London. Leading English Zionists were present.

Stating that the White Paper had been condemned in authoritative quarters in Britain and elsewhere, Mr. Ben-Gurion declared that the document nullified the fundamental principle that the Jews were in Palestine as of right. He asserted that Palestine was the only country administered hy Britain where discriminatory laws existed against the Jews through the White Paper and stressing that many Jews had been massacred who might have een saved in Palestine, but for the White Paper.

The Jews were now at the cross-roads. The only place for the Jewish survivors of Europe is in Palestine.

If the Colonial Office thought that some of the survivors did not desire to go to Palestine, let them open the gates and see, Mr. Ben-Gurion challenged.

The Allied military authorities had announced preparations for their nationals to return to their homes. What was going to happen to the Jewish survivors whom nobody wanted anywhere, he asked.
Demanding the immediate opening of the gates, Mr. Ben-Gurion said that if Britain decided on the establishment of a Jewish Commonwealth which, according to the late Earl Lloyd George, and other British statesmen and the Peel Commission, was always, intended by the Balfour Declaration it would have the support of the United States and Soviet Governments. This was the only solution of the Jewish and Palestine problem which the Arabs would eventually accept, and they would cooperate with the Jews in the upbuilding of the country.

Mr. Ben-Gurion made it clear that the Jews could not he bought off with a number of certificates for the survivors of concentration camps. There must be a radical solution immediately — namely, a Commonwealth enabling a million Jews to enter Palestine within a short time....

Robert F Wagner...
He made clear that the White Paper was of a piece with the mentality of appeasement, first of Hitler, then of Arab rejectionists. For Wagner, support for the Zionist project was at one with the purposes for which the Allies, also known then as “the united nations,” were fighting against the Nazis.
