A painting of a Paris street scene by Vincent Van Gogh from 1887 will be shown to the public for the first time, costs 8 million bucks

At that time, Montmartre wasn't even thought of by "Parisiens" as being in Paris.

The place looks pretty ghetto. Not a picture I'd want to gaze at much.

Worth 8 million, and I can enjoy it for free. Not the same as seeing the actual brush strokes which I'm sure is much more enjoyable, but still pretty good.

The emotion a picture evokes is as important as the scene being depicted. If you could sense the glumness and despair, he did his job.

That's exactly what it made me feel! You put it in words for me.

To really experience a painting, you have to consider more than just the colors and shapes. The old masters knew this, and were somehow able to use it in their paintings. I don't know how they did that, but it's obvious that they did.
