Glance at any opinion poll in the last 50 years, and well over 60% of Americans believe their country is headed in the wrong direction. Both Conservative and Liberal administrations get low marks in this area. Europeans, who live no better than Americans on the other hand, are far more content with their lives and their country than Americans. It seems like the work / life balance is pretty important.
