People seeking asylum from their home country have their claim assessed there and if deemed a legitimate refugee, they are assigned a country of repatriation by the UNHCR according to quotas agree to by the receiving nations.

None of those processing centers are in the USA.

Again, untrue. We took in more than 60,000 UNHCR refugees in 2023. All processed initially at UNHCR facilities offshore.

This has been the official process for determining refugee status for nearly 30 years since the US signed on in the 1990s.

Of course, those without a legit claim to refugee status typically elect to cut the line and enter the country illegally to make up a refugee plea and that IS illegal under US law.
