“The average car buyer doesn’t think about where the parts in their vehicle come from – but automakers do.

That’s why a new round of auto tariffs – this time on parts – coming into effect Saturday could upend the industry, even more than previous levies on imported cars.

As of 12:01 am ET on Saturday, most auto part imports will come with a 25% import tax.

The previous auto tariffs left US-made cars untouched. Not anymore. Not a single of the 10 million cars turned out by US plants last year was built without at least some imported parts. The tariffs on parts could now mean tens of billions of dollars in new cost to the industry – and eventually to American car buyers and owners.”

An unwarranted, needless increase in the cost of cars and car maintenance – the consequence of Trump’s incompetence and stupidity.

The parts tariff will add about $4,000 a car, unless they are from Canada...

For example, parts from Canadian or Mexican suppliers who pay their workers $16 or more an hour are deemed “compliant” with the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, a trade deal negotiated during the first Trump administration. That means most Canadian parts are exempt from tariffs, but relatively few Mexican parts.

we are too stupid or lazy to make our own parts? most of the best parts are actually german made or japanese, they last for ages

Probably will be short term at best, as we work to make the playing field more fair to America. Dimocrats who of course hate America, want to see us continually be forced to pay higher tariffs than our so-called trading partners.

What? No more crappy 'knock off' parts from China that break down quickly? No more crappy one-use tools? Whatever will we do?

Billionaires sent those jobs to China years ago to pad their pockets.

And even parts for my Porsches are sometimes made in China.

more like the companies did, not just one person and yes, I have owned many euro cars and I always try and get OEM or OE and most are made in germany or france but not always, some german parts are made in china, you really need to research now
bosch and behr, even lemforder can be made in china now. I bought a TRW control arm and it was thailand
it depends on the part, a cheap sensor vs something much more expensive

Foreign tariffs make sure we can't sell an American made car overseas so you bet your ass that Trump's tariffs will make a difference in the auto industry and it's about time.

The ball & socket joint for the ragtop on my 986 comes from china. Box says "Porsche Genuine Parts" but the part is stamped "made in China".

sounds OEM but is it really? who makes it? is there any alternative by somebody else? try FCPeuro, they are a great place for parts and list where they are made if the part states, out of CT, good prices and selection

I'll add, dodge truck was getting ready for a new fuel pump, OEM.......made in china! It works so far but it's in tank and the entire bed of the truck has to come off......$$$ thus I am not too happy if this pump fails after 20K miles

China imposes a 25% tariff on U.S. made cars and the EU has about a 10% tariff. Imagine what US car manufactures could do with an equal playing field.

Now tariffs are bad because Trump.

Biden finalizes increases to some of Trump’s China tariffs

And you probably got those Porsches with little to no tariffs...imagine that!

right because the part made in china is sent to the company it's made for and they distribute it from their network, it's not DSD

Bought this at the Dealership. It's a pretty common part for 986-7 and 996-7 so they stock it and I didn't wanna wait because top down season is really quite brief here.

EDIT why not just drop the tank?

I generally buy them used. New cars are for suckers and rich people.
you probably know used VAG cars are $$ pits! I know, I've had a few
I will also add friend of mine owns his own euro garage, master audi/porsche mechanic that can fix anything

some crucial parts like timing belt rollers by SKF and FAG ARE being made in china now too.........damnit

here is something that just popped up, kinda related to parts

You must be Chinese, or at least on their payroll.

Tariffs are charged by our government to foreign companies. THEY make the decision to raise prices or not. YOU do not pay a tariff.

Canada charges American dairy producers a 200-300% tariff making it impossible for them to compete. Nothing unwarranted, incompetent or stupid about wanting a level playing field.

The only idiot here is you for arguing AGAINST fair trade for the United States and her people.

not totally true, only if we dump too much......

  • Quota: Under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), effective July 1, 2020, Canada allows a set amount of U.S. dairy products (e.g., milk, cheese, butter) to enter duty-free or at low tariffs each year across 14 categories. These quotas increase gradually over time, giving U.S. producers more access
  • Tariff: If U.S. exports exceed these quota limits, high tariffs (200–300%, e.g., 241% for milk, 298.5% for butter, 245.5% for cheese) apply to the excess. These rates have been consistent since before the USMCA (e.g., 2017, 2020, 2025), not new or recently changed
therefore trump putting a harsh tariffs on them was out of line, they are not screwing us, only if we pump and dump dairy there and why would we, they have dairies and we have way more people, no need to export any dairy, we have enough domestic demand
