Any libs or cons on here serve? If so. Thank you. You are more qualified to be President than anyone

Why is service in the military so important... Would not a degree in the actual law or economics/business be more useful... Experience in Diplomacy is very vital...

I think not insulting soldiers could a major asset... I am not saying being the military rules you out and could be to the contrary, but there is many aspects to being a President...
Military service in the form of the Air Natl Guard did not help GW Bush much. It only turned him into a war monger.

Carter was a Navy boat driver and it only turned him into a shivering pacifist.

The last true warrior presidents we had were Ike and JFK. Army and Navy.

Go Navy !! Beat Army !! Again.

George H W. Bush enlisted into WW2 and became a decorated Naval air pilot earning a Distinguished Flying Cross
Yet Reagan was sidelined because he had bad eyesight...

Military Service of Ronald Reagan
Ronald Reagan military service was a life long job of President Reagan. April 29, 1937 Reagan in listed into the army reserves as a private assigned to Troop B, 322nd Calvary in Iowa. He was appointed 2nd in the Officers Reserve Corps of the Cavalry on May 25, 1937, and on June 18 was assigned to the 323rd Cavalry.Reagan was on active duty for the first time on April 18, 1942. Reagan had nearsightedness, so he was classified for limited service only so he could not go over seas. His first assignment was at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation at Fort Manson, California. As a liaison officer of the Port and Transportation Office.Upon the approval of the AAF, he applied for a transfer from the Cavalry to the AAF on May 15, 1942, and was assigned to AAF Public Relations and subsequently to the First motion picture base in Culver City. On January 14, 1943 he was promoted to First Lieutenant. He returned to the 1st Motion Picture Unit after completing this duty and was promoted to Captain on July 22, 1943.In January 1944, Captain Reagan was ordered to temporary duty in NYC to participate in the opening of the sixth War Loan Drive. He was re-assigned to the 18th AAF Base Unit on November 14, 1944, where he remained until the end of WWII He was recommended for promotion to Major on February 2, 1945, but this recommendation was disapproved on July 17 of that year. He returned to Fort Macarther California, where he was separated from active duty on December 9, 1945. By the end of the war, his units had produced some 400 training films for the AAF. But his reserve was terminated on April 1,1953. But then in January 1981 he became commander and chief of America!

By his service in the military has influenced many to join the military and help better of our country. It also has influenced my view in what makes a good President. To be a good President and make our country better off you have to experience everything in order to make good choices for our country. What I have learned from this article is that I never knew that Reagan had eye sight problems. This article will give me more background and info about Reagan’s life.

Yeah he did correspondence courses while in the AR, I did also.....you would have never thought he was that bad of being nearsighted since he never wore glasses on screen or as president.......

Thank you for serving.

... at least since George H.W. Bush. I mentioned it in another thread but figured it deserved it's own thread. Why is not having served in the military a prerequisite for running for President? As far as I'm concerned it should be the most important qualification even if for only two years. Very weird the candidates the media gives us.

Nope. A degree in law is especially worthless.

Well Obama showed how knowing the Constitution really helps when dealing with a Congress with approval rating below 20% and an incumbency rate of over 90%....

Knowing the law is vital in being a President considering one of your main jobs is to sign them...

Obama may have a law degree but the courts say he doesn't know a flipping thing about the Constitution.

What in the hell would serving in the military have to do with running the government? By that logic, garbage collectors or meter maids should be Mayors.

I don't think you'd like my way of ruling...........

Don't care how you'd rule, just how it should be.
nothing qualifies a guy for running the world's only super power like being an e4 30 years ago...

Yes...I served. Hell no I don't want to be President.
It's a job that could make me go insane........

My boss's boss's boss is the CEO of the Cleveland Clinic (Cosgrove). They asked him to be Secretary of Veteran Affairs a few years ago(he served in Vietnam). He declined. He said it was too much for him. That's a secretary job. Basically he couldn't handle that job but can handle being the head of the #2 hospital in the World. This man is exponentially more qualified and more capable to be President than anyone I've ever witnessed (competently, since at least 1996 when I was 15) within my lifetime. He would never do it. The scrutiny of politics goes well beyond the job that is required. It's a paradox, sometimes, for us that the men and women most capable of doing a job would never want to do it.

It'd make them 50 times more qualified than Obama was when he was elected. Dunno why you use the word guy. Women are allowed to serve in the military too you know. They don't just have to run for President.

I served 6 years and do not see where it qualified me to be President. Perhaps military service can be something that voters can use as a litmus test but service in and of itself doesn't imbue a person with special qualities. Both Bushs did serve in the military, GHWB's service being very distinguished.

there are just fewer people joining the service these days.

No one is saying JUST serving is okay to be President. It should be a big part. Should people be okay with a President that didn't graduate high school. How do we know how hard it is to be President or what qualifications are necessary really? Assumptions? I assume protecting our country is the number one priority of a President and the best entry level way to do that is to serve in the military.

I think our president should be rated according to several things. Military service being one of them but again, serving alone does not qualify a person for anything. That said, I think everyone should serve it would do a lot of people some good.

Leadership, honesty, integrity and love of country come way before military service alone, in my opinion.

Agree. Those would come easier from a vet though. Neither are even close this year.

A) The media doesn’t give us anything; voters select the candidates and the president. What can change by media input is what the voters find important from one election cycle to another. Eight years ago, experience mattered to you guys…today not so much. Eight years ago, conservative principles mattered to you guys…today not so much. Right wing media has taken the right wing voter and basically turned him inside out. Nothing that mattered back then matters today.

B) The military is to be beholden to a civilian leader. Knowledge of military capabilities, knowledge of military hardware, knowledge of military tactics is great but all of it is subservient to the chess match of international diplomacy.
