Barry gives Medal of Freedom to Tom Hanks, Vin Scully, and Ellen the perv. WHY?

Bill Gates got one too and that's ok. He's a tech businessman. But why give one to silly entertainers or athletes who have careers of ZERO social value.

Obama awards Medal of Freedom to a star-studded list of 21 recipients

nov 22 2016 The 21 men and women who stood awaiting the nation’s highest civilian honor Tuesday in the White House East Room represented Barack Obama’s particular vision of the United States: one where pioneering scientists, groundbreaking performers, crusading activists and unconventional artists chart America’s destiny.

President Obama has not stinted on handing out the Presidential Medal of Freedom during his time in office: He has bestowed it on at least 114 individuals, more than any of his predecessors. Nearly half of the latest honorees were artists, actors or musicians, including singer Bruce Springsteen, actor Robert Redford and “Saturday Night Live” producer Lorne Michaels.

But there were also computer engineers and famous architects, as well as what the president called “rabble rousers” and philanthropists.

You're going to love this:

Reagan gave one to James Cagney, Helen Hayes, Danny Kaye and James Steward.
Bush senior gave one to Lucille Ball and Audrey Hepburn.
Dubya gave one to Doris Day, Charlton Heston and Rita Moreno.

Colin Powell got one from Bush senior AND Clinton.

Bill Gates didn't get one for his business, he got it for his philanthropy.

Dubya gave one to Tony Blair, leader of the Labour Party (more left wing than the Democratic Party).

Obama gave one to Bush senior. Clinton gave one to Ford. The only two presidents to give one to a president of the opposite party, and both were Democrats giving to Republicans.

Dubya gave one to Bremer, you remember the guy who fucked up Iraq seriously? Hmm... who knew "failure" could get you a medal.

Only Nixon and Obama have given one for Space Exploration.

Dubya gave one to Muhammed Ali, Hank Aaron, Arnold Palmer along with a load of other sports people.

This is kind of like when Bruce Gender won the "Courage" award. Lol. Why do we waste money making these awards and having these pompous silly ceremonies that don't really mean anything to most people?

What did any of these people do for freedom?
Do for freedom? The medal is for using freedom to benefit society, culture, and mankind in general. It is awarded to individuals for using their freedom in positive ways. Ronald Reagan got one and so did Mother Theresa. The recipients are chosen as examples of how a person has used their freedom and not taken it for granted or squandered it.

Well that could be anyone!
Most people take their freedom for granted and squander it. Each recipient of the Medal of Freedom gets a citation and official explanation of why they received it. Which one of the recipients do you think was random and not deserving of the award after reading why they got the award?

Tom Hanks, Ellen Degeneres, and others.
Hanks has not only acted in some great movies about American veterans, he produced a pair of epic narratives with detailed facts that educated millions about the sacrifices made by American veterans. Band of Brothers was based on a genuine small unit that fought across Europe and Pacific did the same with a unit of Marines fighting across the Pacific. Survivors of those units were alive at the time of showing, were consultants and contributors and got to see those films and confirm their accuracy. He has starred in and promoted films that educate and inform on many topics.

True, Band of Brothers was awesome, but that is what Hollywood awards shows are for. :) If they are going to call it the Medal of Freedom, then it should be given to people who have actually SACRIFICED something, not people who made tens of millions of dollars off making a movie.

Ellen Degenerate did nothing for freedom or culture or anything.

Know who else did nothing?

Everybody I've called on the carpet to explain how she's a "degenerate". Or in the OP's childish term, a "perv".

Another day they run away.

That is not why the medal was created or what it is for. Just because you do no know its history and meaning does not give you the authority or even right to redefine it because of your ignorance. That is really what this discussion is about. Some folks who did not understand what the medal represents have become critics rather than educating themselves. The only way you can make sense of your position is to make up a new definition, but that is what the right does consistently. Make stuff up. Definitions are a favorite.

Seems to me it's a lot like the Baseball Hall of Fame. That's supposed to highlight players who excelled, and yet every year they come in with the attitude "well we have to elect somebody" --- even if the talent of eligible retired players is just not that rich. That dilutes the whole process and you have people winning awards that you have to look at and say --- "who??"

That's what happens when you start handing out awards for the sake of handing out awards, rather than on merit. These things shouldn't be regularly scheduled or meet some minimum quota or even done in a group --- they should follow somebody's action and be specific. Then they'd mean something.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the Nation's highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

Funny how Republicans hate people because of who those people love. This is why the KKK and the Aryan Nation and the Alt Right fit right in with the GOP. It's all that hate. Hate loves hate.
And the way hate and ignorance seem to got together.

What's hilarious about the gays is the huge contribution to society from such a small group. What do right wingers bring to the table? Related babies? Welfare? Unskilled labor?

If they are going to award such a medal, it should go to people who have actually gone out of their way to do things in the name of freedom. Gary Sinise?

Sinise is a supporter of various veterans' organizations, both personally and through the Lt. Dan Band. He frequently performs on USO tours at military bases around the world, and volunteered for the National Vietnam Veterans Arts Museum now called the National Veterans Art Museum. On June 8, 2011, he put on a space suit to become one of the few people to fly in a U-2 spy plane up to 70,000 feet.[17] Sinise is also on the Advisory Council of Hope For The Warriors, a national nonprofit dedicated to provide a full cycle of nonmedical care to combat-wounded service members, their families, and families of the fallen from each military branch.[18] In December 2011, Sinise was the narrator at the Candelight Processional at Disneyland. In August 2012, Sinise was honored at the United States Navy Memorial, by Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Rick West, and was made an honorary U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer for his efforts in helping veterans.[19] On August 29, 2013, he was named an honorary Marine by the Commandant of the Marine Corps.[20][21] In 2006, Sinise has co-narrated the National Memorial Day Concert on the Mall in Washington, D.C., with actor and Illinois native Joe Mantegna.[22] He serves as the national spokesperson for the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial and spends much of his time raising awareness for the memorial and other veterans' service organizations.[23] In 2012, he was honored by the Joe Foss Institute for his dedication to veterans. In 2013, he was awarded the third highest honor within the Department of the Army Civilian Awards, the Outstanding Civilian Service Award, for substantial contributions to the U.S. Army community through his work with the Gary Sinise Foundation. He participated in Troopathon VI for 2013, as he has in the past, to help raise money for care packages for American troops.[24] He received 2015's Sylvanus Thayer Award, awarded by the West Point Association of Graduates to a civilian whose character, service, and achievements reflect the ideals prized by the U.S. Military Academy.[25][26]

This Medal is dumb. We shouldn't squander money in such a manner.
Donald is preparing to just outright sell them after he figures out a way to turn over ownership of the producer to one of his kids. Putin will be the first recipient. Imagine, Putin with a Donald Trump medal of freedom.

Degeneres came out as a lesbian when she had a number 1 hit TV show and was at the peak of her career. It was a financial risk she was willing to make to support the lesbian community.

So do you just whine on message boards or have you actually joined any of the several efforts attemptinf to get Sinise on the list for recipients of the Medal of Freedom?
