Obviously this was a popular uprising in Russia.
AGREED?
"Obviously this was a popular uprising in Russia." No, its a mental sickness - Pobedobesie.
Pobedobesie (victory of demons) is a word created by George Mitrofanov. Mentioned in the book of Professor, Master of Theology, Archpriest George Mitrofanov with the title "The Tragedy of Russia" (The Tragedy of Russia "Forbidden" themes of the twentieth century, 2009).

Cult of victory in Russia looks more and more like psychosis. Victory stands here for the end of World War II in Europe. But WWII is something boring for Russians. Soviet historicians invented so called “Great patriotic war” – the Soviet-German war during WWII, it was separated to forget the fact that Stalin and Hitler began WWII earlier together as allies.

In Russian language a neologism победобесие appeared to designate this nearly religious cult of victory in Russia. The term pobedobesiye can be translated as ‘victory devildom’.

And you forgot about the most important motto of this cult: "We can do it again".
Roughly 80% of Russians believe, that even if WWIII won't be easy walk through radioactive deserts of the West Europe and North America, with finishing last disorganized gangs of survivors (as official propaganda paint it), loses of 40-60 millions of Russians is "acceptable price" for the victory.

What about your Britain?

Another problem is that after 1917 Russian Empire was transformed in the Soviet Union, and after the 1991 - in Putin's Russian Federation. I'm pretty sure, that our world is not ready to face a monster, which can be born after another Russian revolution.

why Britain?
"Lithuanians" are the drunkiest nation, according to the World Health Organization.
;)
1. Even stupidiest of Lithuanians (or other East Europeans) knows more about Russia.
2. He don't argue to defend "his" opinion (looks like he is just doing his job).
3. This suicidal mix of ignorance, hypocrisy, incompetence and self-confidence is pretty distinctive for the British agencies.

"Russia's defense minister said Thursday that massive military exercises near the border with Ukraine had been completed, and that he had ordered troops to return to their permanent bases by May 1, according to state media."
That sounds like an operation against Russia's domestic enemies near the border with Ukraine. They're criminals in Ukraine, too.

Both Nato and the US came to understand that Russia is not going to fold it's hand on the Crimea.

This now calls for the US to accept that the Crimea was lost to Russia because taking it from Russia was a bridge too far!

The status quo was working quite satisfactory but was upset by US attempts to push the envelope. Russia couldn't possibly allow a new Nato front in the Crimea.

Do any Americans understand the reasons why?

The best interpretation of why Russia demonstrated a show of force was to demonstrate that they wouldn't stop short of nuclear war.
