Another problem is that after 1917 Russian Empire was transformed in the Soviet Union, and after the 1991 - in Putin's Russian Federation. I'm pretty sure, that our world is not ready to face a monster, which can be born after another Russian revolution.

This now calls for the US to accept that the Crimea was lost to Russia because taking it from Russia was a bridge too far!

The status quo was working quite satisfactory but was upset by US attempts to push the envelope. Russia couldn't possibly allow a new Nato front in the Crimea.

Do any Americans understand the reasons why?

The best interpretation of why Russia demonstrated a show of force was to demonstrate that they wouldn't stop short of nuclear war.
