For our religion or form of government to play a role in saving us and our civilization, they need to change. Both Christianity and the American democracy have proved inadequate as we presently understand them to protect us.

In order for Christianity to regain its nourishing force, for example, it will be necessary—at the very least—to jettison the Old Testament (along with its primitive, bloodthirsty, tribal deity) and accept that just because something is “written” doesn’t mean that it’s inviolable. There are no magic books, even if we call them “sacred.”

But the OT is where all the good stuff is. ;)
Well, you may have a point, there. Incest, calls for genocide, burning babies alive, dashing babies' heads against the rocks, pedophilia, incest. If it were published as anything but scripture, it wouldn't be allowed on social media or youtube.

God is blood thirsty in the OT?

:auiqs.jpg:

Any idea when God initiated judgement? Was it not on blood thirsty humanity?

God wipes out the entire planet with a great flood on the premise that the people had become so wicked and blood thirsty themselves, that humanity needed a reboot or would destroy itself.

Then we Sodom and Gomorrah. How bad was Sodom? We see two men enter the city as all the men within the city begin to follow them on the premise of gang raping them, and probably doing worse things to them." That is just a taste.

Or how about the Children of Israel commanded to subdue the people of Cannan who are enmeshed in blood sacrifice to their pagan gods and the oppress and murder each other? Then when they subdue them, the Children of Isreal inexplicably become like them, forcing God to announce judgement on them as well.

It's like entering the horrific concentration camps in Nazi Germany. When Russians entered them, they simply grabbed the nearest rope and ladder they could find. It really was the only decent thing to be done.

You sure? Seems to me that we are losing ground as we move away from both.
Proving its inadequacy.
MOre of both, would probably be an improvement.
Both? The OT was attached to the NT centuries after anyone named Jesus could have lived and declared of "equal divine authority."

NT God: Love your neighbors.

OT God: Genocide your neighbors.

It is stupid on its face and is the reason why our religion has failed to protect the civilization it claims to have created.

The Old Testament is really not different from the New Testament.

The people were hugely more barbaric during the Old Testament period than in the New....but they were still rather barbaric than by today's standards.
However, what is unique is that the Jews were "more civilized" and generally kinder in many ways than the rest of the world.

You didn't become a slave simply by being a foreigner and traveling alone in Israel. (Unlike the rest of the world where this was a real possibility) Slavery wasn't illegal by any means. But it was much more difficult to become one.

Prostitution was verboten in Israel. During occupation it was legalized....but the Jews still sought to treat it as a Capitol offense.

The biggest problem with most people's understanding of the Old Testament revolves around the Caste based lifestyles and patriarchal family experience that people don't really understand or misdiagnosed as being a license to abuse people. Far from it. These aspects of life were about responsibilities and a set of highly complicated social customs that were focused on behaviors and not things.

When the Greeks and subsequently the Romans took over Israel there was a huge clash of cultural norms as well as languages. (Hebrew is a verb based metaphoric language while Greek is noun based and had a different list of idioms)
There was a reason why the Jews hated the Romans.

The NT is just the preachy "love everyone" part. No one is getting smote or stoned or anything (well, almost).
The genocide occurring in Gaza right now is exactly what the psychopathic wilderness slaughter-god ordered 2,600 years ago.

Deuteronomy 20:15-16

Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the
cities of these nations. But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance,
thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth.
The war criminal Netanyahoo openly states as much.

The US is not a Christian nation. Christians have become Jews, just without getting any of the loot. (they get their reward after they die <wink><wink>) all thanks to that giant 5th century theological blunder.

Every single thing you wrote is factually wrong.

Read the Book of Joshua, for crying out loud.

Also, Greek --Ancient, Attic, and modern--uses verbs.

Έν αρχή η ηoς λoξoς. In the beginning was the word.

I love how Christians tie themselves into knots trying to excuse the filth in the Old Testament, which openly calls for their actual extermination. So breathtakingly ignorant and stupid.

Moving away from christianity and american democracy, having negative effects, does not "prove" it's "inadequacy.

Instead the obvious answer is to return to both.
The obvious answer is that it failed to hold us in the first place. Thanks to the giant 5th century theological blunder which has permitted the Jew to triumph finally over the Greek--i.e., the West.

Ummmm....
Ok....just a word of advice from an old axiom.
Better to remain silent and thought a fool than speak and remove all doubt.

I don't see it. We were doing pretty well until the 60s rad freaks started having sway.

The OT is a series of historical events leading up to the Birth of Jesus Christ. So it is important. It does me good to see the amount of discussion and interest in Christianity. Yes we need it in our society or we will become barbarians.

Between 1917 and 1987, Jews genocided 66 million Russian Christians. We allied with them to destroy the Christian nation of Germany. We have not been "doing pretty good."

Many times in Israeli history they "lost" focus on the scriptures to the point nobody knew what they said or meant.
They didn't even know how to appease the religios believers in their own society.

We have arrived at the same place today.

That's kind of crazy talk.

The commies are not a jew front. Jews are over represented in far lefty groups and that is to their shame.

But, commies deserve the credit for their own actions. Blaming jews is not right.
