Jan 30 (Reuters) - Retailer Costco Wholesale (COST.O), opens new tab will increase pay for most of its hourly U.S. store workers to more than $30, according to a memo sent to employees this week.

The company will increase hourly pay for its top of the scale employees over the next three years, with the pay rising by $1 to $30.20 in the first year and an extra $1 each in the subsequent two years, according to the memo.

The pay hike comes after Costco Teamsters union members said earlier this month that they voted in favor of a nationwide strike as they entered final round of talks to reach a new contract ahead of a Jan. 31 deadline.

That’s awesome if it makes sense for them to do.

But when they become too expensive, people will stop shopping there. Employees are always the biggest expense.

The Costco in my AO has almost no employee turnover. Very tough to get a job there.

Costco is an American success story if ever there was one in the retail business.

I heard last night that Costco is about to get hit by these tariffs, I guess that means they raise their prices like everyone else probably will.

Great idea! Costco is the only place I enjoy shopping. I hate shopping and having incredibly efficient check-out lines makes it more pleasant.

The only gripe I ever had about Costco is how frequently they move stuff around. I like to be able to map my shopping trip so I can get in and out quickly, and that takes knowing where I'm going to find a product.

Otherwise, good for Costco.

Tariffs have nothing to do with it.

More likely Al Sharpton threatened them with a lawsuit last week if they didn't keep their DEI hiring practices in place.

They pulled the same stuff with McDonalds before they started jacking up their prices.

This is the left doing everything they can to make food and goods less affordable.

WalMart came under attack from the left before they raised their pay scale so high that they started firing people and putting in self-serve cash machines.

That makes zero sense, but you do you.

I'm just telling you what I remember when WalMart and McDonalds went thru the same harassment tactics from Democrats years ago.

It's no coincidence that Al Sharpton stormed into Costco last week to threaten their owners with lawsuits, and now they're raising wages.

Higher wages is only going to result in price increases and fewer job openings.

Nevermind the fact that Democrats are constantly trying to jack up the MW 24/7/365, knowing full well businesses can't afford to pay unskilled workers $30/hr. This is just another example of going woke causing businesses to go broke.

Walmart recently raised their starting wage to $15 an hour because Illinois law forced them to. Just last year I knew someone making $14 an hour who had worked there for 7 years.
I made $14/hr working for TRANE building air conditioners.

I went to work for the Dept of the Army and eventually made $23/hr....$32/hr on overtime.

But I had specific skills that took years of training. Paying $30/hr for untrained employees is pretty ridiculous.

If Democrats would spend more time trying to drive prices down instead of fcking people, then maybe they wouldn't have to cheat so much to stay in office.

Democrats want to artificially raise wages so that prices will go up, along with inflation. Then they'll blame all of the Hell they created on Trump.

Not one of them will accept blame for the failures they cause when they're in charge. It's always racism and misogyny that caused it.

That seems unnaturally high to be feasible.

I'm afraid that your biases have overridden your logic, think about this possibility and consider I might be right.

Democrats do a lot of stupid shit, no question, but they are not trying to make things more expensive.

Trump knows prices will rise with his tariffs and it appears that he does not care.

Obama did everything he could to raise the cost of living. He used trans-fats as an excuse to double the price of Hostess cupcakes. He made sure that fast foods and sugary drinks went up in price. He said he would never raise taxes on anyone making less than $400k/yr, but he raised excise taxes his first day in office on 9 different products including cigarettes and alcohol.

It's a pattern I've noticed for years. Jimmy Carter made sure that the price of gas doubled during is administration.
Joe Biden took it to another level. By raising energy costs Joe Biden made sure that grocery prices would raise 40% in his first year.
They used climate change as an excuse to gut our fossil fuel industry.
China is building a new coal fired plant every month, but they don't have to worry about environmentalists putting a monkey wrench into to every new construction during the permit process.
