...that's what we used to call them, though I've heard them called blackjacks, slapjacks, and slappers.
You hardly ever hear about them anymore, but before tazers, asps and batons, this was the less than lethal weapon of choice for law enforcement everywhere...
I used some banding material and some lead weights, scrap leather and waxed thread. Bent a piece of the banding material in half so it is doubled up to make the handle firm but also springy. It doesn't go all the way to end of the handle to leave room for a grommet to add a retention strap.
This project required minimal specialty tools and about an hours worth of work that wasn't sanding or burnishing the edges...which is still ongoing.
