Earthquake Swarm Resumes in South Salton Sea: 175 Earthquakes in past 24 hours, 1376 in the Past 7 Days

The very concentrated swarm of small earthquakes (most less than Mag 2.5 noticed just last week quieted on Wednesday and Thursday, but then resumed back to its unusual high levels Friday evening through Saturday morning!

Are we concerned yet?
Maybe the predictions will come true yet--we can only hope. AZ would be beachfront.

No. If the there is a swarm that forms a Mogi Donut, then you may have cause for concern.

No, small tremors like that release energy in small increments making any more significant seismic activity likely less powerful. There's not much around there anyway.

The San Andreas has a branch that runs through there. I think theoretical maximum quake in that region is an 8.5 or thereabouts.

And, you have to have a SHITLOAD of small quakes to relive the pressure buildup associated with a large quake.

Does anyone know what Lex Luthor has been up to lately?

Boston Creams are my weakness. I'll see if Dunkin has a Mogi

No. Lots of small earthquakes are a good thing, they relieve the stress building from continental drift. It is the areas where there are few quakes, like SF, that have to worry. Those plates are locked and will eventually give way in a large quake.

That many earth quakes is likely a good thing.
It means strata are moving and not stuck.
It is when it gets stuck and finally builds up to a big jolt that is destructive.

Generally true.... unless it INCREASES the differential stress elsewhere that actually increase the chance of a large quake and earlier in time too.

Phaw ... just a few aftershocks from the recent major earthquake in that area ... are our lifestyles so dull and boring we have to invest a crisis? ...

Any second now ... 9.8 M in the San Gabriels ... there goes 65% of US agricultural production ...
