British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said after the summit in France that four points had been agreed: that military aid to Ukraine would continue; that Ukraine must be involved in all peace talks; that European states would seek to deter any future Russian invasion of Ukraine; and that they would form a "coalition of the willing" to defend Ukraine and ensure peace there in the future.

This, Starmer said, would mean a European 'peacekeeping' force, including British troops. But he has previously said that it would be essential for the US to provide a security "backstop" for such a force. In other words, after all the talk of Europe "stepping up" and the need for European security "independence" from Washington, this would actually make Europe more dependent on Washington by putting European troops in an extremely dangerous situation from which they would (not for the first time) expect the US to rescue them in case of trouble.

Instead of helping to end a clearly lost war through negotiations, the leaders of major European countries are planning to continue supplying arms and sending their own troops to Ukraine, risking provoking a military clash between Russia and the West and drawing the United States into the conflict.

I like the part where the money to help Ukraine isn't paid by the government or taxpayers. It's from frozen Russian assets.

Have those assets been liquidated to pay for things?

Or are they just a giant escrow account the west assumes they will get from any settlement?

They have $300bn in frozen cash alone of central bank funds...

There is also the ability of going after Russian Oligarch money too..

So the answer is "the West is paying for all this, and the frozen assets are a hail mary attempt to recoup said paying"

They are sitting in EU bank accounts...

Hail Mary is mineral rights...

Thanks for playing...

Ye haven't a clue what is going on... Russia has cash and assets all over Europe... One of the advantages of Putin being a corrupt POS is that taking money off Oligarchs is taking money off Putin himself..

So in escrow, and not actually being used to pay for anything. A bunch of IOU's that would be part of any negotiated settlement.

No not escrow....

On deposit...

Are ye slow... EU has been moving Russian money for decades...

Russians own huge chunks of London... We haven't even talked about freezing that...

This is who Putin sent to the failed peace talks with Ukraine before the war...

So what you are saying is Europe is pretending to be tough with some minor bullshit, but in the end Russia is calling the shots?

In Trump's world...

But not in the real world... Russia would not beat Europe in war, it wouldn't be close... EU has far higher tech weaponry...
Neither would be close to US but Europe has main advantages over Russia especially after Russia being exposed to being that weak..

I say Ukraine backed by Europe could split Ruissa's battleline and cut off Crimea.

They control the energy production for most of Europe. What happens if Russia shuts the pumps and compressors?

Europe would have to maintain forces in Poland and the Baltics unless they want Russia to do an end run around whatever they send to the Ukraine.

Those "Russian assets" are civilians and its a violation of the Geneva Convention to impose any sanctions on civilian commerce.

Is that a fact? Ever heard of the REPO Act?
