Given The Chance To Start Over, What Would You Do Different With Social Security

Oh, what a brilliant idea! How do you propose seniors get by, work their whole entire lives?

It's called saving for retirement. You have your entire working life to do it.

Statements like this irritate me, they really do, it's a massive generalization that ignores, well, everything. Financial crashes? Low income families being stuck at the bottom of the ladder? Emergencies? Medical bills? Heck, college costs, working a low wage job your whole life, family costs, feeding yourself, stagnant wages.. Then again, so many people have this mentality that they just need to save money, people do save money, the problem is, it's hilariously unrealistic to assume anyone could save enough to prepare for decades without a program like social security.

Your last statement is somewhat strange, given what you listed above it.
I tend to rant when I'm irritated, maybe it did.
You you really buy into the crap in your signature?
The demands of the socialist party when Eugene debs and the working class was active in America? Yes, I do, that is the goal of socialism in today's world.

Cuba is a leninist state that formed under revolutionary conditions with consistent support from the people, and when comparing cuba to, say, haiti, a capitalist country, you can clearly see the progress in Cuba. Cuba is not something I want to emulate, but using your argumentation, we could say somalia is an example of capitalism without regulation, but that'd be unfair, wouldn't it?

Never create it

I am aware of the concern over the elderly.

Like I said in the OP, it was a necessary stop-gap.

But, the money for social security comes from somewhere.

While I would never "privatize" it, I would like to see the money you put in treated like your money.

Of course it comes from somewhere, that's how a state with taxes work, get over it, none the less, we could help alleviate the cost by cutting from the military, putting back a progressive tax system that is actually progressive, etc, etc,

As designed, the system should work. The problem is that it was expanded to children, spouses and the disabled.
Then, the government saw it as a cash cow that could be raided at will.
Return it to when it just paid a 65 year old retiree and when he died the spigot got turned off.
Hard assed? Yup, but OP asked...

Yes, I did.

And thank you for answering.

I have not argued against it. So there is nothing to get over. I am simply pointing out that in the over scheme of things, it nets to a person for person contribution. It is leveled somewhat with the wealthy maybe paying more. But, as I understand it, they collect more.

What you propose in your second statement is a completely different discussion.

I am not sure you ever answered the question asked in the OP.

Thank you for not making that comment connection.

However, I do believe that countries like Denmark probably have good pension programs. That is just speculation.

I'd be curious to see how that funding fits into the overall income/contribution situation in a country like that.

If anything.....

Social Security was a necessity when it was instituted.

It's history is less than straightforward.

Some people currently detest it and want to get rid of it. Some would phase it out.

Some would change it and keep in control of the government.

What would you do if you had complete control over the system.

Keep it, beef it up, phase it out, get rid of it.....????

I would vote it down.

"Probably" LOL. Facts are scary, scandinavia is a prime example of the "evil' welfare system where people suffer. Oh wait..

So...would that be if it were first proposed....or now (thus taking it from many who've paid into it for a long time) ?

Would you keep it ?

Make it bigger ?

What ?

For one the lying corrupt scheming puke politicians would not be able to touch one red cent of the contributions. Those fuckers in Washington have spent every last dime I have contributed. If you look in the trust fund account you will find IOU's from congress for over $2 trillion dollars they borrowed and spent and have no way of paying us back.

That goes in line with what I'd like to see.

You have to pay in. And the government agency that has it is regulated and treated like a bank. It will always keep good cash on hand. It will pay interest.

What you put in, you get out.

Thank you.

I'll be reading more. But at first glance they have private plans to supplement.

I recall the first meeting I attended where my pension benefits were being explained. It was explained to us that Social Security was never intended to be the primary retirement income for anyone.

They also have virtually free healthcare, education, high wages, strong labor unions, etc..

Yes. Before Social Security was passed we had this thing called "saving for retirement." We also had another thing called "taking care of your parents."

I think allowing people to buy government bonds with it so that it becomes an own able asset would be better.
