He wants 8 games outside the US. I am not a fan of that, it means 8 teams will lose a home game and that ain't cool for their fans. I doubt it makes financial sense anyway, everywhere else plays a different kind of football and I doubt the big money is there.

He is trying to build the NFL into a global brand that fans in these nations can enjoy. I presume the revenue sharing will be spread across the league so that teams don't lose much revenue if any. They also charge a premium in say, Japan, S Korea, England, Germany etc than even what they could charge in the U.S because of how much of a luxury such a game each year would be.

On the surface it makes sense to me.

After factoring in the costs I doubt there is much left over to spread among all the teams.

And unless you actually put teams in Europe, a logistics nightmare, well, it isn't going to amount to much.

Yeah, but isn't the revenue gained from an overseas game offset at least partially by the lost revenue from the home game would've been played in the US? Not just by the league but also the affected teams and their fans and the surrounding associated businesses that won't get the boost from that home game that is now thousands of miles away? What do you tell your season ticketholders when they find out they paid for 9 home games and only get 8? It feels like a ripoff to me, naked greed that might not payoff in the long run.

They keep pushing the WFL. It has bombed every time they've attempted it. This is the first step. They test the waters with games played internationally and then spend a bunch of money setting up teams abroad that ultimately go broke due to lack of interest after the novelty wears off. Meh.

Exactly. The rest of the world doesn't give a damn about American football, and they never will.

Sounds pretty much like bone-headed idea. Fans lose out on a game, the cost alone would ridiculously high.

Goodell has wanted a European division for a while. Just way too many problems. Scheduling would be a nightmare, what are players being paid in (American dollars vs Euros, pounds, whatever). NFL Europe failed for a reason. American football works as a once in a while event, but the interest (outside of a very few areas) just isn't there for permanent teams.

Paul Tagliabue started the World League of American Football in 1989. It lasted until 2007 before going bust. There was a World Football league 1973-1975. The last iteration started in 2008. They keep trying it and never seem to learn that Europeans don't like American football. Throwing good money after bad.

When they play games oversees, they don't care about the money from ticket sales. They care about the TV revenue. The NFL thinks playing games oversees will significantly increase TV revenue.

I remember the NFL Europe in the Early 90’s. I’d buy Pro Set football cards and they’d have these bums from the NFL Europe in there… used em as noise makers on my bike spokes
