Has Anybody Seen The Sky Tonight?

It turns out that those bright stars in the sky aren't actually stars at all. I saw Venus outside a little bit ago. 😁 How fitting for the first day of February.

Yep, that was the crescent Moon in conjunction with Venus in Pisces. Just a bit to the west much fainter was Saturn in Capricornus.
The Moon is orbiting near Earth, Venus is inside orbiting the Sun, and Saturn is on the far side of the Sun having just come out from behind it in superior conjunction.

If you looked high to the South near the head (the Vee) of Taurus, you might have also seen Jupiter, pretty bright in the sky, next brightest planet to Venus. And to the East in Gemini, Mars is also rising.

So in one gaze, you can see Venus, Earth, the Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Every visible planet except Mercury.

Star and planet gazing is an interest of mine since a child. There are times when all the planets can be seen in the night sky. Different views of our moon especially in the month of March are amazing. Watching a full moon rise above the horizon over the ocean can be an amazing site.

As a kid I learned "stars twinkle and planets shine". Is it true?

Actually it is, mainly because a star is a "point source" of light, so perturbations (scintillation) of the atmosphere, bends the light this way and that away from the eye making it appear to twinkle, especially if near the horizon.

But planets never twinkle because they are composed of millions of rays of light, and the light of the planet is the average of all of them. Instead, if you look through a telescope, this averaging of the light rays causes the details of the image to just blur.

I really enjoy getting away from the city lights and sky gazing at night and very early in the morning.

Six or so years ago my 5th graders sang this for a concert. They were OBSESSED with it. So many connections between them and their grandparents with this song.

Next song on the list...WHo loves you pretty baby :D

How can you see earth if we're on earth? 🤨

Look down. It's right under your feets :)

Lol I meant in the sky. Unless you're seeing it from a spaceship you can't see it in the sky if you're on it. 😆
