When U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told senators that “the president has been clear with me and with others that he does not intend to have exclusions and exemptions,” I am reminded of an old Chinese proverb: "A clay figure fears rain; a lie fears truth."

The Trump administration is now saying phones, other electronics exempt from new tariff.

"The exemptions come days after the U.S. trade representative said “the president has been clear” that he does not intend to give exemptions to the tariffs."

The Trump administration has spared smartphones, computers and other electronics from what the White House calls “reciprocal” tariffs, a move that experts said Saturday will grant U.S. technology companies like Apple a reprieve from the steep hikes imposed on China.

The directive, issued by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, identifies nearly two dozen exemptions, including chips, flash drives and TV displays. President Donald Trump directed there be refunds for any duties that were collected on the exempted products since April 5.

The announcement follows Beijing’s raising tariffs on U.S. goods to 125 percent in response to Trump’s escalating trade war, with China’s State Council warning Friday that it will “fight to the end.” The exemptions also come days after U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told senators that “the president has been clear with me and with others that he does not intend to have exclusions and exemptions.”

In response to questions Saturday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the United States cannot rely on China to manufacture critical technologies.

Follow Trump’s first 100 Days

“That’s why the President has secured trillions of dollars in U.S. investments from the largest tech companies in the world, including Apple, TSMC, and Nvidia,” Leavitt said in a statement. “At the direction of the President, these companies are hustling to onshore their manufacturing in the United States as soon as possible.”

All American, but especially the people who voted for Trump had serious concerns over Trump's China Tariffs. But the relief may be short lived as many Americans eat out on Holidays, and traditions are doing so at Chinese Restaurants.

Maybe The Chinese will wake up and be smart. I have a simple solution to get around a Trump China Tariff: China should rename the fortune cookies, chop suey, and chopsticks Americans love so much, like we Americans did with French Fries when America was angry at the French.

China sees Trump as a Clay Figure.

Several factors are driving the movement of tech companies back to the US, including increased tariffs, a desire to reignite energy and morale among employees, and a push for domestic production of critical technologies. Some companies, like Apple and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), are being urged to set up domestic operations. Additionally, some companies are returning to in-person work, such as Salesforce, which has seen many employees return for four days per week.

Here's a more detailed look at the factors:

1. Tariffs and Trade Wars:

  • President Trump has been advocating for the return of critical tech production to the US, citing concerns about tariffs and the potential for disruption in supply chains.
    • The push to relocate manufacturing includes electronics giants like Samsung and LG, who are considering moving plants from Mexico to the US to avoid tariffs.

    • While some tariffs have been temporarily suspended or exempted, the broader US-China trade standoff remains a significant factor.

Tariffs on chips, phones, laptops still coming, commerce secretary warns

Trump officials adjusted their position a little more than one day after the White House announced an exemption from “reciprocal” tariffs for semiconductors and tech products.

People like you have narratives base solely on what Trump says. That's a risk that even a child would be aware of.

Now look at what is happening out in the real world -- outside of Magadonia:

Manufacturers struggle with uncertainty, chaos in Trump tariffs

International orders are stalling for some businesses, as buyers in other countries try to make sense of changing policies.
