How did mentally ill killer amass an arsenal? This is not the Question that they should be asking. Christian Phillip Oberender killed his mother with a shotgun, he was deemed mentally ill and dangerous by a juvenile court and committed to a psychiatric hospital.
The question they should be asking is "why after only 8 years was Oberender was released?"

Oberender, 32, is believed to have obtained a legitimate firearms permit due to a number of snafus, including the fact that the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension had no record of him murdering his mother. This is totally unacceptable. Even with stricter gun laws would not have helped in this case.

However, keeping a convicted murderer locked up longer than 8 years would have done the trick.

Dear Desperado:

What will reduce the incidence of mentally ill going unchecked
is serious research and implementation of spiritual methods of diagnosis
and treatment of schizophrenia and other addictive disorders
which HAVE been demonstrated to work effectively.

Authors who have advocated and written about the need for scientific research and
development in this field of spiritual healing that would
revolutionize mental and medical treatment:

Dr. Francis MacNutt "Healing" (1999 or later editions)
Christian Healing Ministries

Dr. Scott M. Peck "Glimpses of the Devil"

Dr. Phillip Goldfedder
Healing Is Yours

NOTE: for those opposed to federalized health care mandates due to religious issues, the practice of spiritual healing would reduce costs of health care and make treatment equally accessible to all people. Proving the effectiveness and necessity of spiritual healing to cure certain mental and even criminal illness, would force federal authorities to recognize the need for "free choice" where govt cannot regulate "spiritual healing and forgiveness therapy" as required to cure certain types of addictions and conditions caused by abuse that is healed by these methods. The healing by forgiveness-based therapy works where it is freely chosen, and can never be forced or else it fails. The govt cannot impose or require these treatments except where criminal illness becomes a threat to public safety, and science is used to prove when someone is dangerous before they commit crimes, and to verify medically when such persons are cured of their ill conditions and no longer a threat.
Without such a medical gauge, that is why our mental health and criminal justice systems are failing at a cost of billions to taxpayers, which could pay for effective health care.
