How did mentally ill killer amass an arsenal? This is not the Question that they should be asking. Christian Phillip Oberender killed his mother with a shotgun, he was deemed mentally ill and dangerous by a juvenile court and committed to a psychiatric hospital.
The question they should be asking is "why after only 8 years was Oberender was released?"
Oberender, 32, is believed to have obtained a legitimate firearms permit due to a number of snafus, including the fact that the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension had no record of him murdering his mother. This is totally unacceptable. Even with stricter gun laws would not have helped in this case.
However, keeping a convicted murderer locked up longer than 8 years would have done the trick.
