There is an idle nuclear powerplant unit available in Seabrook NH. Would AI power needs be able to use it?

Seabrook Station Nuclear Powerplant

Since Microsoft bought TMI Unit #1, is there another big money AI player who would buy Seabrook Unit #2 and finish it?

I'm not sure how many more idle nuclear powerplant units there are, but if "green" nuclear power could support AI needs, that might be a great fit.

As the cost of energy increases, nuclear might be a viable "green" alternative, especially since some plants are existing.

we could save all that energy by closing down the bitcoin mining scams.
You would think that old tech nuke plants would run into the same protest obstacles for the same reasons.
they will.

you use microsoft's operating system, do you really think they can run nuclear reactor safely?

A/I? Power plants? Nuclear? Huh? Is there an article that explains the process of what you are talking about? How is A/I involved???

AI is a power hog. As the NYT says below, AI could use as much power as the US uses today. So what is going to happen?
AI gets shelved?
AI gets the power it needs? (from what????)
Something else?

Microsoft's AI Power Needs Could Reopen Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant

Artificial intelligence is an electricity hog. Google says its total greenhouse gas emissions climbed nearly 50% over five years, mostly due to electricity that powers AI data centers.

1. Could AI make bitcoin mining profitable? But the main use of power is AI data centers.
2. Would today's "greenies" protest clean nuclear power? I don't think so.
3. Microsoft would not build or operate the nuke plants, they would pay for them, own them, and use the cheap, green, power for their new massive AI data centers.

microsoft has a deal with the 3 mile island corporation . they say they need the power for their new a i systems.

clean ??????

what you gonna do with the spent rods?

who insures these things? that's right . no insurance company will touch it. the usa taxpayers are responsible for every square mile contaminated by these things.

and they are p0rime targets for sabotage and terrorism.

we will protest. hard.

1. Nukes are green, no CO2 emissions.
2. Spent rods go to Yucca Mt. or other safe long term storage places.
3. There are operating nuke plants all over the US, insurers are plentiful.
4. If the fucking democrats didn't have open borders we wouldn't have any terrorists here. If Trump gets elected they will be deported. Nuke plants have serious security systems.
5. Protest all you want, it won't stop anything.

If there is a nuclear future (ok that sounds weird) new gen small modular reactors will be that future.

That was the thinking before Microsoft bought TMI.
Now I'm not so sure, the infrastructure to connect to the grid and all of the permitting is already done for existing plants.
Permitting a new nuke plant can take 10-years, plus the construction time.
Plus siting a nuke plant, even a small one, is much tougher than just building a data center, nuke plants need lots of water for cooling. Water is scarce, except by the big lakes or oceans.

I understand. Its a similar idea to refineries and petchem plants. The permits are worth more than the plants, and production increases arise from plant expansion on existing sites.

SO you have a very good point. However, shut down nuclear plants are a finite thing in the US. We will need more capacity than that (assuming fusion is still always 'in the next five years").

IF "self-learning" (Generative) AI can figure out "fusion" it might happen in 5 or 10 years, or AI will say its impossible for our primitive technology. Then we're stuck with "all of the above" ways to generate electricity.

no, they were not worried about co2 emissions at chernobyl or fukushima either.

check on that insurance. i own enough pg&e to be up on diablo canyon (safe and clean on a feakin' fault line.)

yes, there are operating plants. a diminishing number .

a few hamaz here, a taliban or 2 i'[m sure are apprehended at the "open border." most of the terrorists are meeting with their oath keeper militias and proud boy troops right after megachurch.

Chernobyl did not have a containment building, and the operators were at fault for the meltdown, read up on it.

Fukushima was swamped by a tidal wave, which should have been a design condition.
