How much do you need to win by for you to have a "mandate"?

A mandate would be the White House, Senate, and House. The margins wouldn't really be important as that result removes the opposition from significant power for two years. No politically motivated impeachments, no needless frivolous 'investigations', and no excuse for the president not to keep campaign promises.

Now, obviously, you only win with electoral votes; "winning" the popular vote and $1.00 will buy large Diet Coke at Wendy's.

So, how many EVs do you need to legitimately claim a mandate?

Does that number apply to both sides, or just one?
I ask because we all know people who will argue "Trump didn't win by enough to claim a mandate" will also argue "Harris won, period, so she has a mandate".
In US politics, you only need to win by one vote and you believe that gives you a mandate to do whatever the hell you want.

We need to incorporate womandate into our language, for heterosexuals like me.
Mandate implies not working at all with the other side. Come together, right now, over me.

I absolutely hate that word mandate because it automatically draws a picture of exclusion. I still believe that there is a way to gain the respect and approval of 80 to 90% of the people if you really put the effort into it. This constant warring over political division has become tiresome and highly destructive to the nation.

True.
But you can bet that the Democrats won as the Republicans did, you'd be hearing it everywhere.

Thank you. I doubt it will be that way.

It’s almost a given that Republicans will over reach and in two years get thrown out of Congress

Sigh.... Something deep down inside me tells me that you're probably right.
