I believe they would & as U said it's not just a lefty practice. With the statist left though nothing is surprising. Wouldn't put it past any politician to make such a claim. The problem that democratic party politicians have is that when you represent the well educated (or even the poorly educated), you can't come out of left field with wild allegations because it won't work unlike those on the right to where they will believe any lie from one of their own.
