The negative sign in front of those words is supposed to cause your search to reject any result that contains that word.

In other words, a Google search for dogs -cats will only return results that have the word "dog" in them.

Although it's not really 100% effective.

That is correct. Nothing is 100% effective. But it is a very underused and relatively unknown search function, IMO. Most people don't know it exists, and therefore never use it.

That's why I put it in my sig to raise awareness .
