The Islamic State (IS, formerly known as ISIS/ISIL) has executed 1,878 people in Syria since the declaration of its "caliphate" in June, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitoring organization. Most of IS’s victims have been civilians, including eight women and four children. The militant group has also killed 120 of its own members, the bulk of whom were fighters trying to return home. The radical Sunni insurgents kill those whom they accuse of violating their strict interpretation of Sharia law. They have distributed videos of brutal beheadings and executions of journalists and enemy fighters through social media.
