Pro-Trumpers know that anti-Trumpers derive most of their beliefs about how evil he is by taking - or pretending to take - anything he says absolutely literally, no joking, no hyperbole, no analogies allowed for the Bad Orange Man.

But the NYT finally admits it:

Mr. Trump’s tone has had none of the trolling jocularity that surrounded his repeated suggestions in recent weeks that Canada should become America’s “51st state,” including his social media references to the country’s beleaguered prime minister as “Governor Justin Trudeau.”
Of course, they only admit it in a story in which they themselves misunderstand Trump's art of negotiations.

On Saturday evening, he had accused Panama of price-gouging American ships traversing the canal, and suggested that unless that changed, he would abandon the Jimmy Carter-era treaty that returned all control of the canal zone to Panama.

“The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous,” he wrote, just ahead of an increase in the charges scheduled for Jan. 1. “This complete ‘rip-off’ of our country will immediately stop.”

He went on to express worry that the canal could fall into the “wrong hands,” an apparent reference to China, the second-largest user of the canal. A Hong Kong-based firm controls two ports near the canal, but China has no control over the canal itself.

Weird that the New York Times doesn't know that Hong Kong is China now and has been since 1997, when the Brits' 99-year lease finally ran out.

Hong Kong enjoys a large level of autonomy within China, especially regarding the conduct of corporate entities.

Sadly, this is typical Trump. Whining about the "unfairness" that Panama gets to control it's own canal, but not understanding the complexity of current canal operations

The biggest problem is that due to Global Warming (you know, the stuff you guys don't believe in) the waters that feed into the Canal that keep it working have dried up. This means it takes ships longer to traverse the canal because there is insufficient water to fill the locks.

The ultimate solution would be to build a sea-level Canal in Panama or somewhere else in Central America. China had examined the possibility of building one in Nicaragua, but that has been abandoned as not worth the ROI.

You realize his ranting about the canal only started after Panama demanded trump pay the back taxes he owes in Panama. More petty crap from a childish wannabe tyrant.

Most of them are of the generation that probably thinks New Mexico isn't a state and part of the U.S., like the morons who were going to deny him a security clearance because he was born in New Mexico and not in the U.S. lol he actually had to go to court to school the morons.

Not true at all. Panama made that claim years ago, and is still in court. They have not managed to prove that Trump owes them a dime.

Trump is a joke, a bad joke.

Trump is using his usual tactic of DELAY DELAY DELAY. He knows he owes the money, but he is hoping to wear them down with delay.
As he has said many times, that is the system the government - primarily under Democrat leadership - has created. He knows the system is rigged because he uses the rigging in his favor.

Don't like it? Unrig it.

I think you miss the point.

Trump is abusing his position (or soon to be position) because he has a dispute with a foreign government over taxes he owes.

Another Trump Conflict of Interest? It must be a day ending in "Y".

Of course they know it..... Their job is to stack whatever available facts they have in such a way as to create a narrative. There is no more honest news reporting left on this continent. If it wasn't for X there would be no form of information available that could be trusted whatsoever.

/——-/ There may just be two large bodies of water on either side of the canal that can be tapped.
Can anyone verify this?

Thats a lie

China rules Hong Kong with an iron fist

Not really. Hong Kong has a lot of autonomy.

again, here's the thing.

China is willing to invest in the third world, we are not.

So not surprisingly, China is making inroads.

The real problem with the Panama Canal is that climate change is effecting operations. The Canal has to be fed by local waterways. These waters are drying up with droughts caused by global warming. As a result, it takes longer for the Locks to fill up, taking longer for ships to traverse it.

But Trump, being Trump, is going to bluster instead of help.

You clearly don't understand how the Panama Canal works. The Canal is ABOVE sea level, that's the whole point. Fresh water from the lakes has to flow down to fill the locks.

Now, hypothetically, could they pump salt water from the oceans into the canal? Sure. It would destroy most of the surrounding agriculture and you'd need a punch of pipelines to do it, but I guess that would theoretically possible.

There are no US shippers being screwed. Its a smoke screen AGAIN. But now China has a way in.

/——/ I understand that. They need fresh water which can be sourced and desalinated. They pump it into the lakes.
