The number of babies born in Japan has dropped to the lowest the country has ever seen since records began 125 years ago, falling ninth straight year despite the government's efforts to reverse the decline.

Japan recorded 720,988 births in 2024, five per cent down from the previous year, the health ministry said on Thursday.

The year-on-year decline underscores Japan's long-standing issues of a rapidly ageing and shrinking population, which has serious fallout for the country's economy and national security.

The country saw a record of 1.6 million deaths last year, causing the population to shrink by almost 900,000 people, including those who immigrated out of Japan.

It means that two people died for every new baby born.

Reacting to the development, prime minister Shigeru Ishiba accepted that the trend of declining births has not been reversed yet.

"We need to be aware the trend of falling births has not been arrested. But the number of marriages posted an increase. Given close ties between the number of marriages and the number of births, we should focus on this aspect as well," he said.

Japan: "You've only worked 87 hours this week, why not 120? You need to show your commitment to the company!!"

Also Japan: "Why aren't people having any more kids?!?!?!"
Sigh, I grudgingly volunteer to do the job Japanese men won't do.

Better yet just send a division of Marines to Japan....They have more stamina. ;)

You're looking at our future. :)

Japan is investing in robotics to replace the shrinking workforce. It is highly unlikely they will do what the US has done, import a people to kill off the Japanese.

Send Musk to Japan. He has produced almost as many children as all of Japan.

Nothing hotter than a good looking jap woman. You could have nonstop kids with a hot woman there because your activity would be nonstop.

Japan is still struggling to recover from the collapse of the bubble economy in the 1990s, when most new college graduates could not find a job. This lost generation is responsible for Japan's falling birth rates. Marriage is out of question, if you earn less than $2,000 per month by doing odd jobs.

Although there is no official definition of the Ice Age Generation, the government points to those who began job hunting from 1993 to 2004.

Many had a difficult time becoming salaried company workers and ended up as non-regular employees or freelancers.

Across the country, there are estimated to be more than 17 million people in that situation.

Japan is not alone. Every industrialized nation on Earth is at zero population growth or below.
