"He took us to the mountain tops.â âBig and bold.â âHe wowed us!â
No, these arenât movie critic blurbs on a movie poster praising a star actorâs performance, these were the immediate reactions from the liberal media to President Barack Obamaâs first address to Congress.
Will Donald Trumpâs speech tonight receive similar accolades?
Given the pressâs hostility to the new president, it seems unlikely.
But back in 2009, the first takes on Obamaâs speech were effusive. MSNBCâs Chris Matthews gushed
âHe wowed us!â CNNâs Jack Cafferty proclaimed âHeâs got what it takes to lead this country back into the sunlight.âABCâs George Stephanopoulos cheered that Obama âbegan on hopeâ and âended on hope.â
Stephanopoulosâs colleague Terry Moran called the speech âbig and boldâ but never called it liberal, even though it was a wish list of leftist policies.
On the other hand, Governor Bobby Jindal, who delivered the GOP response that night, was called a
âDebbie Downerâ by CBSâs Maggie Rodriguez.
MSNBCâs Keith Olbermann: âWhat can the Republican response be?...How do you come out against recovering the nationâs sense of self and its optimism?
How do you come out against words like âboldly,â âwisely,â âswiftly,â and âaggressively?ââ
