I am of the impression that he can "stamp it out" at will. I could be wrong but I think he is several steps ahead of the West. My military experience is limited to only 3 years of active service (one year at war) and not in a command position but life itself presents us with many lessons. One of the many lessons I have learned is that boasting usually doesn't win the prize and sometimes downplaying your strength is a much greater advantage. It means that when the moment is optimal you can unleash your hidden strength for the KO because your opponent is completely unawares. Personally? I think Putin has a lot up his sleeve and when he finally pulls them out the Western “experts” will be saying, “Damn! I didn’t see that coming!”

I don't think Putin gives a stuff about "new land area". Subduing Poland and Romania (read NATO) is good enough. As far as the Middle East goes I think Putin will get to that once the smoke has cleared over the skies above Ukraine but until then he'll keep his eye on the Middle East and discuss strategy in privacy with his military and political brass.
