A judge handed down more than 11 years’ prison time to the unpaid helper at a Parkrose corner store who killed the boyfriend of a suspected shoplifter in 2022.

Once an employee at the 7-Eleven next to the Interstate 205 bridgehead, Stevie Moore was living on the streets and still hanging around the store when the on-duty clerk got into a scuffle with a woman, Adrian Clark, who allegedly tried to steal two bottles of motor oil. It was about 9 p.m. on Nov. 23, 2022.

A judge sentenced the unpaid employee of a Parkrose corner store to more than 11 years in prison. who killed the boyfriend of an alleged thief in 2022.

Stevie Moore, once an employee at the 7-Eleven next to the Interstate 205 bridgehead, was living on the street and still hanging around the store when the employee on duty got into a fight with a woman who allegedly tried to steal two bottles of engine. oil. It was around 9 pm on November 23, 2022.

Jason Kinsfather, the woman’s boyfriend, came in to defend her and threw a small rock at the employee, Sohel Ali, who grabbed a bat from behind the counter, according to surveillance footage cited in a prosecutor’s memo.

Everything seemed on edge, but another customer managed to calm their heads. That’s when Moore grabbed a glock from her bag and pressed it against Kinsfather’s chest.

“That doesn’t scare me,” Kinsfather responded, just before a fatal shot rang out.

Moore fled across state lines to Vancouver, where he was arrested a few days later.

Kinsfather, 49, who lived in a van at the time, left behind a daughter and son in Alaska.

“He always told me I was his rock, but he was mine too, and now my rock is gone,” Kinsfather’s mother, Terry Hall, said during the hearing. “All I have left is this box of ashes.”

Hall, of Washougal, has filed a $3 million wrongful death lawsuit against the owners of the 7-Eleven, arguing that Moore worked as a quasi-unofficial security guard at the store. The owners deny that and any responsibility. The lawsuit is ongoing.

Moore, now 35, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison as part of a deal with prosecutors. Multnomah County Circuit Judge Cheryl Albrecht ruled that he was eligible for time off for good behavior during the final five years of the punishment.

I know that store. Lot of shit goes down on that side of town. A lot of semi-seedy apartment complexes right there.

Reading that piece, I see another- a guy was stabbed a few blocks from my old shop on the other side of town.

Glad to be out of there. Screwed up town.

But it was a "small rock!"

I wish they had shown a picture of the woman who did the shooting.

Best part about dating a homeless girl is that after the date, you can drop her off anywhere.

So a quart of oil is equal to a black man's life in your racist eyes.

No, it's not reasonable to grab someone's gun and shoot someone in those circumstances. No one was in danger for their life or grievous bodily harm. They could have just let the guy and his girlfriend leave with the oil, and called the cops.

The rock throwing is an assault, and the guy would have been charged with a third degree assault and the woman with shoplifting. They would not have been punished for it- it's Portland after all, but the guy would be alive, and the former employee would not be in prison.

An ex-employee that is hanging out around the premises, who grabs a gun from a customer's purse, and shoots a shoplifter with it- there's something wrong with that guy...

The guy was not employed by the company- he was a former employee who was basically living on the street. He probably hung around to get free food from the other employees.

You use a gun- no matter how justified- you better expect a world of shit to come down on you from the police. You gonna go through that for a quart of oil that doesn't even belong to you?

It's called common-sense, and this guy didn't have it. The rock throwing was over and done with. The situation was being de-escalated.

Then he grabbed the gun from another customer's purse, and stuck it to the guy's chest. Sure, let's all play tough-guy now...

Stupid episode on all parties involved- one is dead and the other one's life is ruined.

For a fucking quart of oil.

And the woman should have secured her gun so that some stranger
a. couldn't see it, and
b. couldn't snatch it from her purse and use it on someone.

There are no "good guys" in this story.

The family doesn't have a claim against the store, but the owner will be named because that's what lawyers do. The woman who owned the gun is probably named in that suit as well, and she may have some liability. That will be decided by a jury.

The family does have a claim against the guy that used excessive force, but there is nothing to recover from someone who is living on the streets.

I've been carrying responsibly for 40+ years and, I went heeled in my business in that town, especially at night. I never brandished my gun, or put myself in a position where I might need it. It's there as an absolute last resort.

If the guy who was shot was bashing in someone's head with a rock, that would be a different story, and shooting him may have been justified in that case. But that's not what happened here. This was more like a bunch of irresponsible adults that converged in one place and interacted, and it turned out bad for everyone.
