On a hill
There is a thread on this already, but that discussion is on the politics, history revision etc.
This is about the movie itself - as a movie.
And as a movie - it was boring. There was no cohesive story being told. Just a series of events stitched together rather poorly. As well as no character development. You watch this movie and there are no characters you really care about - including Mary because the writers did a very poor job introducing her to the viewers.
All in all - it is simply a boring movie, with no tale being told

IT's kind of hard to build a movie about a character who is only mentioned in a few lines of scripture.

Agree, when we saw it available - that is exactly what I said to my wife. "How are they going to make a movie about someone with so little content known about them?
We started to watch it more from that curiosity than interest.
On that - the movie strays so far from the Bible that is a complete fiction. You might as well as called the movie "Susie".
But I was just telling in the OP about the movie itself.

And to be fair, there really isn't any story sizzle in an impregnation and birth that doesn't involve sex.
That's your hook, whether you like it or not.

Not that I have any intention of watching it, but does it just cover the events of the Immaculate Conception, or does it also go all the way up to Jesus' life and crucifixion?

The thing about the Catholic beliefs is that they have a lot of "Traditions" about Mary. Mostly because they invented fan fic to use her as a substitute for various Goddess figures in paganism they were trying to replace. But I don't think that would have flown with the Evangelicals who this movie was probably targeted towards.

We only stayed watching for the spectacle of what other fabrication were they going to throw in.
These multiple appearances of Lucifer - which never happened. Joseph's "Believe all Women" attitude - did not happen. King Herod did have a nephew Marcellus, but there is absolutely no record that Herod was even aware of Mary let alone ever met her, and certainly never tried to have her killed.

Ah, now interesting point.

The Gospel of Matthew did have the slaughter of the innocents.

The Gospel of Luke had a completely different excuse of why Jesus was born in Bethlehem but lived in Galilee.

Of course, the problem with these two contradictory stories is that they would place the birth of Jesus about 10 years apart.

Herod died in 4 BCE. The Census of Quirnius wasn't ordered until 6 CE.

Not all knowledge of things comes from the Bible.

Plenty is known about Mary from other church writings of the time and of course her appearances to saints over the years.

It does begin with Mary's birth, but doesn't really go into any teaching on the Immaculate Conception. Just to clarify for anyone the Immaculate Conception refers to Mary's conception.
I agree with the OP the movie was not that interesting.

Which might have been interesting. But instead, Netflix chose to do a more revisionist / gender reversal story where Mary is central to everything.
Example - it was Joseph who angels appeared to on multiple occasions to tell him to marry Mary, as well as to tell him she would get pregnant without sex.
They borrowed the story where Jesus is tempted by Satan, and applied it to Mary. Didn't happen.
And on and on.

Except that's not true, either.

Matthew's gospel has the angel appearing to Joseph.
Luke's gospel has the angel appearing to Mary.

The problem with the Gospels is that they are both expanding on the Gospel of Mark, which didn't even name Jesus' mother and spent no time talking about his childhood.

the authors of Luke and Matthew expanded on Mark, pitching to different audiences (Luke was appealing to Greeks, Matt was appealing to Jews). So they made up different stories.

I thought that it looked boring. If you want a couple of really good religious Christmas movies to watch them I recommend The Nativity Story and Christmas With A Capital C.
