A Mesa teacher is locked up abroad. Kayria Rosales has been in a Mexican state prison for a week after accidentally trying to cross the border with a firearm.
The family’s lawyer says she could be there for months before she is sentenced.
Her family is worried sick.
“Very stressed. Very concerned. Anxious,” says Audra Ward, Rosales’ sister.

Rosales is a science teacher at Red Mountain High School.
Her family says she and two friends were driving to Mexico for a last-minute spring break trip last Thursday when Mexican authorities stopped them at the border.

I understand why she was arrested. This has to be a nightmare.

The Mexican government has no problem denying the US government extradition of Mexican citizens if the citizens committed heinous murders in the US and is eligible for our death penalty, yet lets our citizens languish for long periods before even being tried then keeps them in inferior, rat-infested prisons.
A case like this one is overkill. Mexico seriously hammers people that bring in a firearm from the US, yet their heavily armed cartels run amok across Mexico, even controlling some towns. Each case of someone crossing into Mexico, should be quickly evaluated and decided upon as to whether the person coming across was just someone who forgot their "legally" owned firearm was just brought across accidently and thus, ushered out of Mexico with a warning to not return with one in their possession, or the person was some wanted criminal in the US, fleeing the law.
As for this teacher situation, the US should drag the Mexican Ambassador into NSA headquarters and inform him that they will be holding him until the teacher is returned to the US. The Mexican president would complain, but watch that teacher be quickly ushered to the border.

Mexico is a corrupt country. A friend of mine was caught with a fire arm in Mexico. He wa s of Mexican decent. The firearm was confiscated but he was not charged. Others have rotted in jail when they found a few rounds of ammunition in their car. You don't want to rot in jail don't go to Mexico.
