New York school assigns racist word-problems to fourth-graders

God move for the socialist liberals, start teaching white guilt at a young age. Maybe the teacher should include some math problems on Anthony Johnson. You know something along the lines of;
If Anthony Johnson, an African from Angola, was bought as a slave in 1621, freed by law in 1635, then went on to buy and own his own slaves, one of whom was John Casor, in 1651, whom he went to court over in 1654 to have the right to own Casor for life, how many more years did Casor live as a slave of a fellow black man than Johnson did as the slave of a white man?

Because you keep asking for a swallow, S.Gay.

Why is that?
Think anybody's gonna buy that answer?

Buy what?

That you are a faggot?

Yeah..I think everyone buys it.

S.Gay.

You keep asking for a swallow.

And the answer?

Still no.
You're not fooling anyone with your front, Swallow. It's obvious you're gay, otherwise you wouldn't be trying so hard to convince everyone you're not. I think American _Jihad accidentally outed you.

This is probably a case of damned if you do..damned if you don't. But I agree the Teachers did something stupid. But trying to get kids more involved in learning is a good thing.

Yes, I agree that getting kids more involved in their learning is a good thing. This was a cross-curricular activity. But the teacher should have supervised it from the beginning and been aware of what was an appropriate choice of questions and what wasn't. The teacher should have been able to explain to the students what kind of questions are appropriate and what are not and why. It's really a fail in the training and judgment of the teacher, not this school or school district or having anything to do with the NY school system, or anything like that.

Still, I am thinking this is more of a "snapshot" that got bubbled up because it seems like something very bad. Teaching in New York Schools is no picnic. Not only do you have to deal with some pretty messed up kids, but you are constantly under the gun, underpaid and over worked. It's not a "fairy tale" that most of these folks have to dive into their own pockets for supplies. That's reality. You also need a masters to teach in this school system. You don't necessarily have to have it from the beginning..but you need to get it. So that means many teachers are themselves, students. And again, that comes out of pocket.

Add in all of that..and you get the picture.

Actually, most teachers in America have the equivalent of a master's degree: in order to keep their certificates active, they have to take 15 hours of higher education every 5 years. And, yes, they pay for it themselves.

Still, teachers come from all backgrounds. The accusation that all or most teachers and that the system is primarily liberal in perspective is inaccurate. It is, indeed, only the far right and fundamentalist Christians who believe otherwise. The variety of political and social backgrounds of teachers exists within a very broad spectrum, as does their education, training and experience. This teacher made a mistake, which has been blown way out of proportion, and needs to self correct.

You reinforce my point; only the far right and fundamentalist Christiand believe the US system of education is run by liberals. To you, anything that doesn't agree with your perspective is liberal. You are so out of touch with the greater, real world that you don't realize it.

LMAO, please, please tell me where you're appearing next. I love political humor/satire and you're good.

Nonsense. This is about the judgment of a couple of misguided and obtuse teachers. it has nothing to do with right wing or left wing.
Bullshit, it has everything to do with the left-wing.

No. This has nothing to do with any 'wing.' This is not a political issue. This topic does not belong in 'current events,' nor does it belong in the racial issues or political thread. This topic belongs in the education forum. It is about the poor judgment of a couple of teachers. It is an unfortunate event. I wouldn't fire the teachers. They made a mistake and need to be censured for it and guided to not repeat such a thing. It is about poor judgment, period. We read about teachers doing amazingingly stupid/foolish things. It happens in many different ways. We act like teachers are not supposed to make mistakes, but the truth is everyone makes mistakes, sometimes really horrendous ones. However most teachers are intelligent people doing a good job. The times when one makes a really foolish mistake like this, we hear about it and make a huge to-do about it. Firing her/him is going too far. It should be a 'lesson' learned instead. This teacher was probably fired because the media made such an issue of it.

But this a political issue, a partisan one? Absolutely not. It is really tiresome that people try to make every issue on these boards about right or left, liberal or conservative, white race versus black race, etc. Life is not that simplistic.

I read the article very quickly but I thought it said a student teacher was apprehensive about making copies of these problems and consulted her supervising professor who had expertise in black issues? The professor got involved and headline news was made.

More structure -supervision and guidance from the teacher seems to be the glaring issue here.

I've taught fourth graders and am not at all surprised that they could and would create a math problem such as this. Easily fascinated by obscure and exciting details==left to their own devices.

I have come to accept that if 'public school' is mentioned then automatically that becomes a political issue because the government is involved. NYC would be among the most liberal areas, if not the most. So I suppose I do consider this a 'Current Event' with political aspects.

I wonder how the extreme polarization of political beliefs is affecting children? Hopefully many tune it out. I try to do the same.

Before I knew anything about slavery in the US I had heard Bible stories about slavery--beatings and cruelty. That sounded bad. I think kids understand that slavery is bad pretty easily. fwiw.

I agree that 4th graders could easily create math problems such as described. They would be facinated by the details and might have some concept that slavery is bad, but I don't think they realize just what it is and how bad it is. I think they are too young to understand it with much depth. I don't think the kids were being racist; I think they just didn't understand. The teacher is at fault for not recognizing the insensitivity of those questions. The teacher needs to be more aware.

I think the media made it a political/racial issue. They tend to blow things up out of proportion just to get attention.

That is what the media exists to do.

Somewhere along the line I hope the pieces of the puzzle fit together into some semblance of a 'big picture'. Europe--yes, all sorts of things that should have never been done were done and there is no changing that. People wanted a fresh start--which could never be perfect.

Possibly around 5th grade the industrial revolution is covered. Plenty of injustice occurred in that era --right there in NYC.

New York school assigns racist word-problems to fourth-graders - Salon.com

“Slavery Word Problems Homework”

“In a slave ship, there can be 3,799 slaves. One day, the slaves took over the ship. 1,897 are dead. How many slaves are alive?” and, “One slave got whipped five times a day. How many times did he get whipped in a month (31 days)? Another slave got whipped nine times a day. How many times did he get whipped in a month? How many times did the two slaves get whipped together in one month?”

This is just mind boggling.

Okay, rw nutters, bring on your excuses.

Why would RW Nutters need to explain something done in a School ran by the Liberal Teachers Unions, in a state run by Liberals?

hmmm?

Excuses? I think YOU are the one that needs the excuses. Conservatives don't control public schools.

You're kidding right?

Conservatives control schools all over the nation.

They are trying to teach kids that jeebus road dinosaurs into the arc. :cuckoo:

they dont control them out here just in certain areas.....and it doesnt matter anyway....MONEY is what determines a good school district....

There have been millions of enslaved folks of nearly every ethnic origin throughout history. Insensitive to those that cling to the distant past and every cultural injustice in world history to be sure. A better more modern example could have used urban gang bangers instead.

I think they should have used mw workers, they are today's slaves.
