"Prime Minister Urged to Declare “Emergency” After U.S. Stops Funding Australian Universities

March 22, 2025 | Sundance |

If you find yourself wondering, wait, what, why are we funding Australian universities? You are likely not alone.

Apparently, the U.S. government has been sending $6oo million/yr to universities in Australia to subsidize various college research programs. The Trump administration has told Australia the funding will likely end.

The Australian university system is in a state of panic, telling their government to declare a “state of emergency”.

One particular quote from within the Sky News article below seemingly encapsulates the mindset of the situation in the land down under:"

We are broke. The USA is the most indebted nation in the history of Mankind. Why are we funding Australian universities?
Why are we paying for virus research in Communist China?

All reactions to Trump's mistakes regarding tariffs should be read as good news. All victim countries are in the process of diversifying trade relations away from America and toward other nations that practice free and fair trade.

Tough love at first will soon turn into revenge and hatred.

This is a thread about the US funding foreign universities. Perhaps, you can find a tariff thread somewhere?

It's all the same ugly fascist actions being taken by America. The attempts with tariffs are at the root of all the hate and evil.

Mandate:
We don't give a shit. Our money is going to stay here now. You don't support our universities with millions. We are just leveling the playing field. Stand on your own two feet...

I went through Uni here in Oz back in the 70s when tuition was FREE. So did two of my brothers. The system was pretty lean back then and damn good. Then the bureaucrats started the process of turning it into a money machine and frankly there are far too many bullshit courses that only go to pay loony lecturers. The STEM components are still excellent though and if the US is in partnerships with those then they're getting value for money; otherwise it's just money being pissed up against the wall. Years ago one of my brothers and his mate were in business together and would team with a research unit and commercialise their products. It wasn't common back then but is more so now. If an INVESTMENT then the US money is well spent; if just grants with DEI crap attached then keep your money US and let the locals come to their senses!!

The US has been played for fools for so long it's even hard to fathom.

The real question is, how much was kicked back into DNC coffers?
As I said Rellic if there is a $ Benefit to the INVESTMENT then fair enough. But otherwise it's just wasted. The "10%" kickback is the missing link ; good point.

We are trillions in debt, so what did we get in return for the “investment?”

Thank goodness for the Trump admin highlighting this waste and cutting it

Here is a thought, Australians and Australian taxpayers pay for their own universities. I mean really how hard is this. It’s why the European countries depend on us to supply their defense for over a fucking 80 years. Because they are leaching useless individuals!

What's your skin in the game "foreigner?"

America first

also

Trump is absolutely right!

"The Trump administration told Australian universities that the funding halt was to prioritize administration goals and avoid "DEI", woke gender ideology, and the green new deal."

Dunno; I didn't get any. But I think we're forking out about $3B for Aukus and we're buying US military stuff; best there is!! We're pulling our weight, Bru!!

AI thingy:

Australia generally has a trade deficit with the United States, meaning the US exports more goods and services to Australia than Australia exports to the US, with the deficit usually around $30 billion annually.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Trade Deficit:
Australia typically runs a trade deficit with the US, meaning the value of goods and services imported from the US exceeds the value of goods and services exported to the US.

  • Recent Trends:
While Australia had a trade surplus with the US in 2023, it is expected to return to a trade deficit in the coming months.

  • 2023 Figures:
In 2023, Australia's goods and services exports to the United States were $33.6 billion, while its total imports from the United States were $65.1 billion.

  • Trade Surplus with China:
In 2023, Australia had a trade surplus with China of over $110 billion, which is significantly larger than the trade deficit with the US.

  • US Trade Surplus with Australia:
The US has a trade surplus with Australia, meaning they export more to Australia than they import from Australia.

  • 2021 Trade Data
In 2021, the U.S. exports to Australia were $26.4 billion, a 13.1% ($3.1 billion) increase from 2020; U.S. imports from Australia were $12.5 billion, a 13.6% ($2.0 billion) decrease; and the trade surplus with Australia was $14.0 billion, a 56.0% ($5.0 billion) increase
