Reagan's ode to immigrants.

Open doors for the American dream. Reagan’s last speech as president (1989).

To be clear, I am not a fan of Reagan. He has benefitted enormously, from a reputational standpoint, by a massive amount of revisionist history written about him by conservative media. This rhetorical mythology has sainted a deeply flawed, simplistic, ideologue who served the interests of the men behind his rise to the presidency.

But to his credit he did have an understanding of the contributions to the country made by immigrants. And he possessed the courage to do something about it.

A Reagan Legacy: Amnesty For Illegal Immigrants

trump fans likely regard Reagan's attitude towards immigrants as deeply flawed. I regard it as one of his only redeeming qualities.

Now, we have stuff like this.

Stephen Miller seemed floored by the idea, raised during a fall Cabinet meeting in 2018, of  keeping open the doors for Afghan allies and other Middle East refugees to enter the US.

“What do you guys want?” Miller, then a top adviser to President Donald Trump, asked incredulously, according to one person in the room. “A bunch of Iraqs and ‘Stans across the country?”

His words stunned many in the meeting, but they were no accident. Under Miller’s guidance, several sources told CNN, the Trump administration was purposefully slow-walking the entry of all refugees – including allies who aided American soldiers in Afghanistan.

You are dishonest to the core.

11 million is a reasonable figure

I am fine with illegal criminals, skippers of visa expirations, and their family members being deported.

If Trump deports 500,000 I will be surprised.
11 million is the figure "they" have been using for 30 years. Glad to hear nobody else has broken into the country under Biden 😂

Is that so.

That means that you have to put a system together that will deport THIRTY MILLION PEOPLE

Lots of luck
Suppose we do our best and only achieve a net reduction of 3 million a year?

Would that be more to your liking?

See post #50

If the inflow has stopped and only 500,000 a year are deported thats better than things are now

But I think we can do better

A. Business would scream

B. That would by your estimate leave 27 MILLION ILLEGALS. Hardly a drop in the bucket

C. Just trying to deport 3 million people would be a humanitarian disaster… not to mention what it would do to legal system

That points out that the biggest “benefit” is WORK
It also points out that among the “benefits” they receive is free legal assistance in asylum claims. People are not “drawn” here by the hope of fighting to stay here.

But fine. List what you see as benefits that draw them here.

A. Business would scream

Maybe. But business will adjust
B. That would by your estimate leave 27 MILLION ILLEGALS. Hardly a drop in the bucket
First you complain that I want to deport too many. But now you sneer at me for not deporting more?
C. Just trying to deport 3 million people would be a humanitarian disaster… not to mention what it would do to legal system

Its already a humanitarian disaster taking place at the border and in American cities

A situation MAGAs have been warning about since 1986

I’m pointing out that deporting 3 million out of 30 million is pointless especially considering the other points mentioned.

Business will scream and pressure the GOP to knock it off

The humanitarian disaster trying to deport 3 million would cause dwarfs any of your imagines “disaster”. Not to mention what would happen to the rule of law.

So you want amnesty for everyone

Does that include the millions that will sneak in during the coming years if we continue to fo nothing?

We tried to put a stop to the mass migration years ago when the numbers were much smaller

But lib’s attitude then was the same as now

I haven’t mentioned amnesty once.

Hearing voices again?
