It's been clear for a while, that Harry Reid has gone off the deep end.

What hasn't been clear, is just how deep it is.

Today, Harry Reid will go out on the Senate floor and call for a constitutional amendment to reverse recent Supreme Court decisions maximizing the influence of big money in politics. It’s a significant escalation of Reid’s war on the Koch brothers — and, more broadly, of the Dem strategy in 2014, which is in effect a strategy of running against plutocracy.

Reid’s office provided me with a transcript of his planned remarks. An excerpt:

“The Kochs’ bid for a hostile takeover of American democracy is calculated to make themselves even richer. Yet the Kochs and their Republican followers in Congress continue to assert that these hundreds of millions of dollars are free speech."

Harry Reid is as crazy as a shit-house bat. Pure and simple. Completely out of his pointed little head.
That kind of commentary is comparable to scrawlings on a toilet wall. It's pointless and contributes nothing.

Harry Reid isn't always right but this time he is 100% right on. He knows better than we do how menacing this Citizens United abomination is and what its ultimate effect will be. What I find stunning is how so many ordinary citizens seem oblivious to the inevitable consequence of money-driven elections. It will reach the point where foreign interests will be channeling de facto bribes to existing candidates and incumbents and eventually financing the election of their own insiders to propose and pass legislation.

Citizens United must be eliminated! It is critical. Don't allow your feelings about Harry Reid to influence your thinking where this issue is concerned. There is poison in this pudding.

Current election law prevents politicians from accepting contributions from foreigners. We aren't talking about what the candidate can accept here. The point of this law is to prevent independent groups from expressing an opinion about a candidate or his policies. It's a straight out attack on the First Amendment. Only a Stalinist would defend this despicable piece of shit.

Uhm, because there's an even larger shit ton of cash to be had if said politician gets re-elected.

It ain't that hard to figure out.

I was waiting for JakeStarkey to answer. But let's keep going.

What are the mechanisms by which that larger shit ton of cash are acquired?

While I am not an expert in this area, I have always believed that political power was economic power.

The mechanism could be anything from sweetheart deals to politicians using what they learn in government to leverage in the private sector (becoming high paid lobbyists comes to mind). Cheney leveraged his connections to the middle east to make a ton of money at Haliburton.

Is this where you are headed ?

Cheney was fabulously wealthy before he ever accepted the nomination as vice President, so that's a pile of manure.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has set up a procedural vote for September on a constitutional amendment to limit money in politics.
Before adjourning for a five-week recess on Friday, Reid filed cloture on the motion to proceed to S.J. Res. 19, which is designed to overturn two recent Supreme Court decisions that allowed corporations, labor unions and wealthy individuals to spend more money on federal elections.
Ok, he's only set a procedural vote which means nothing. The Amendment itself needs to pass both House & Senate by a Super Majority, then it must go to the States where 39 States (3/4) need to pass it through within a predetermined time period (usually about 7 years).

A walk in da park!!!!

Reid wont live to see it, so what's his angle.

This is just a political stunt to solidify a base, & throw everyone off balance....that is except the demotards, who will jump on this like stink on shit setting up the 2016 Presidential Election Year.

The Tea Baggers will work for free, posting these partisan propaganda misleading threads.

I take the obvious approach. Madison believed big money was the real threat to the American people, and how right he was, yeah

A request of states is why to begin the amendment process through Congress.

Can't legally silence them so let's change the laws to eliminate freedom of speech. That will fix the problem.

Reid is so obsessed with the Koch brothers that he fails to do his job.

The accusation of "big money" ruining politics is just a red herring to excuse the ignorance of the American people. An informed electorate can't be bought by any amount of third party campaign cash.

Informed by what?

News?

Media?

A guy on a horse?

Big money controls our media. Which, by the way, is our source of getting information, since most of us can't be all places at all times.

Amendments change the Constitution, avatar4321.

Such a procedure requires a super majority to amend the Constitution in order to prevent big money from crushing the free speech of its opponents.

The amendment stands no chance in the House and even if it did pass you'd never get enough states to ratify it. The only reason it passed the Senate is because the Republicans knew it was just a ploy to use against them for the election if they voted against it so they beat Harry Reid at his own game. Reid was actually rather dissatisfied last night that it passed.

No, he wasn't.

Now he can blame the House GOP, which was the point of the exercise.

It's not eliminating "Freedom of speech".

It's eliminating the role money has in stifling Free Speech.

Money doesn't stifle anyone's freedom to speach. The First Amendment protects Freedom of Speech. It doesn't enforce equal speech. That's what Stalinists like you refuse to understand.

Foreign Cash Disqualifies Romney from Presidential Bid Veterans Today

They should be prosecuting Obama as well, but under the Holder Justice Department only Republicans get prosecuted for anything.
