Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin made a one-hundred percent mistake blocking the life sentence plea deal for three conspirators of the 9/11 attacks! The Secretary's analysis of the issue is not the optimum analysis on this issue his view is that the harm done by the hijackers and their conspirators the killing of the three thousand Americans that day the loss and suffering to their families and the loss of life and causalities incurred to the U.S. serviceman who had to as a result of that terrorist act go fight in the war in Afghanistan and the loss and suffering to those service members families warrants that a criminal trial be held will the full scope of penalties including capital punishment the allege perpetrators be made to face! There is a higher interest at stake here the reputation of the country, the cherished and high principles and values America stands for. The situation at Guantanamo Bay Cuba where Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the two other conspirators who were involved in the plea deal were held is a black mark on America's reputation that America's leaders need to end as quickly as possible. There is approximately thirty people held at the Guantanamo prison most without being charged with a crime and those charged not brought to trial in a timely manner and these prisoners many have been held for around two decades. Bad countries hold people in custody without charging them for a crime and not giving them a trial. This is a hallmark of brutal dictatorship countries and authoritarian regimes, it is indefensible, morally intolerable and an ongoing disgrace of epic proportions for America to maintain this situation at the prison in Cuba.
This plea deal remedies this wrong for three of the prisoners at the Guantanamo prison they would have been given their criminal due process civil/natural rights. Plus, examine the merits of the issues here no fair judge could issue a capital sentence against any of these defendants because their rights were so violated by the U.S. government. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was tortured over one hundred and eighty times many involving waterboarding no fair judge would let in any statements into evidence from that defendant and Guantanamo Bay Prison was a dungeon like facility for many years I am sure the other two defendants were tortured many times so therefore their statements wouldn't be admissible in a fair court of law. A fair judge would side with a responsible defense attorney claim that there treatment in the Government hands was so abusive that they each have suffered significant mental faculty damage so that in sentencing these defendants upon a finding of guilt a fair judge should have reservations incapable of being overcome in issuing capital punishment because their right to a fair trial was not clearly given because their treatment in the government's hands probably impaired their right to defend themselves as the government damaged their mental faculties!
America went into Afghanistan to capture and/or kill Osama bin Laden the head of the al qaeda terrorist organization responsible for 9-11. It seems Secretary Austin's contention is we cannot have a plea to a life sentence here we must have these defendants face capital punishment because their criminal behavior on 9/11 forced America to enter into and engage in that war in Afghanistan that cost two thousand and three hundred U.S. serviceman and servicewomen their lives and twenty-thousand wounded. This is not intended to be disrespectful to Secretary Austin for he is a great man and a great citizen but really isn't it too late for you to be a perfect champion for all these patriotic service people who paid either the ultimate sacrifice for their country or a great sacrifice. You work for an administration that by its irresponsible withdrawal from Afghanistan made it an actual fact that the sacrifice of all these wonderful men and women was just a big waste it amounted to nothing the Taliban are back in control of the country and life for the Afghan people is one that could be fairly categorized as one of the Middle Ages. Of course if a President is elected to exit from a war which really is an unfair statement for U.S. troops were not in a combat role the Secretary of Defense has to follow orders. But considering a Military Expert like General David Petraeus and many others said America could have remained there indefinitely in Afghanistan with 2500 soldier after surging troops to respond to the Taliban rebuilding its forces within the year long cease fire. When Secretary Austin like the rest of the world saw the Afghanistan security forces collapsing and saw that President Biden do nothing not using America's crushing air power to slow or stop the Taliban march on Kabul so that the Northern Alliance militias could be armed and Afghanistan Special forces be repositioned to save at least a part of Afghanistan why did not Secretary Austin resign to stand up for the fact that the America government should not let the sacrifice of so many American men and women in uniform giving of their life and health be a waste a complete waste. The only real consideration here is the 9-11 families and like all victims of crimes the government does its best but sometimes their best is less than perfect justice; the U.S. government prioritized fighting terrorism over getting these perpetrators to account for their wrong criminally so the government tortured them for intelligence with that the U.S. government tainted the criminal prosecutions of these individuals that is hard for the families to take having a good criminal justice system mandates this outcome!
