The bald eagle has been an American symbol since the founding. However, it was discovered recently that the eagle was never formally declared to be the "national bird". Look for this to be rectified in the near future.

But why the eagle? Perhaps there is religious significance, to wit:

Revelation 12:14
And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

Eagles are huge. Wingspan of at least 6 feet. This was as close as I could get:

That pole is about 8" at the top and you can see its talons are bigger than that.

The local hawks are about 1/3 that size. The 40 yard away pic really doesn't

capture how big those things really are.

I agree with Ben Franklin that the wild turkey should be our national bird. They are a peace loving bird. Besides that they make good bourbon.
That's what my brother-in-law drank. He's gone now.

Turkeys are the national bird...every November. :p

There is a lot of speculation about that verse. Many believe it refers to America. Some think England. The time, times and 1/2 time ( 1+2+0.5=3.5 ) correlates with the first 1/2 of the Trib period peace treaty. I just don't know. Some think the woman is Mary, some think it is Israel, with Satan as the dragon and Jesus, the child. I think it will be revealed as time goes on...

We can't eat our national bird lol but I literally just found out about the bald eagle never being the official national bird and I think that it's either the Mandela effect, or I'm living in an alternate universe because I was taught in elementary school that it was.

Btw about the turkey being the original national bird.

The descendants of Israel were "carried to the wilderness on eagle's wings", the 'wilderness' was the New World, the 'eagle's wings' was the protection of the archangel Michael, thus the eagle is the proper national symbol.
