True, but not all systems of slavery are the same. Our form of chattel slavery, with the sardine-shipping and hunting down and beating and random killing, is different from many other societies'. Rome, for example, often treated their slaves very well.

Also, we were the first county to embed into our origin story that slavery was bad, because all men were created equal. To set such a lofty goal for ourselves and then not have the political will to attain it kind of gave reason for others to view us as hypocrites.
