On The Way Home To Earth
I heard this on the news and kinda figured it had some truth to it, but now I know.

What I heard on the news was that in the past couple of years, over 1 million Americans have been displaced out of the workforce to be replaced by foreigners! Now, from time to time, I take a taxi (mostly Uber and Lyft) and since last summer, I was surprised by the number of times that some foreigner would pick me up who spoke little or no english. One of them told me not to even talk because he spent the whole time in a conversation on his Bluetooth set talking to someone in a foreign language I could not even guess what it was! But it was obviously NOT European and was some sort of eastern/middle eastern language.

So today I get picked up and it was a very nice 30 year old black kid from North Carolina who had just moved here--- we had a very nice conversation about a number of things (he had not heard a thing about that trucker's strike on the Canadian/American bridge during Covid), and we got on the subject of this thread talking about employment/unemployment, and he confirmed it! He said that he knew about that, had seen Americans unable to find jobs, and had personally seen a lot of regular American citizens get fired only to be replaced by foreigners.

So just now, I get picked up to bring me back home and when I get in the car and start talking to the kid, right off he tells me: "I do not speak English!" Then he proceeds to put music on softly, and as I listen to it sitting in a traffic jam, I realize that the singer in the band is singing in a foreign language! And as before, not in any language that I could identify.

I did not find the thread I wanted to back this up, but these kind of parallel:

I hate calling in to customer service and having to deal with a foreigner who sort of knows English, but the accent is so bad they have to repeat everything several times or more

Immigrants have been the replacment in every generation.

This is nothing new at all.

Not true

When America was young there was a labor shortage

Immigrants were vetted before approval and there were jobs for everyone because industry was expanding

Now is very different

Now is the same that we have a labor shortage, and we will fill some of that with immigrants.

I remember my parents telling me that when their parents and grandparents came over in the 19th century to Ellis Island, they had to show means of support, a destination, what they intended to do for work, and get tested for disease. You did not just walk in.

And those folks came here to BE Americans.
