Here's the thing: Modern advances in cardio-vascular pharmacology have truly improved the outlook for obese humans. It used to be quite rare to see obese people in their 70's and 80's but that has changed. Their blood pressure, heart function, etc. can pretty much be controlled now.

This is not to say that their quality of life is not impacted by obesity. Those of us who work with older Americans know that many of them are hard pressed to stand up, walk, negotiate stairs, and their hips, knees, and other lower extremities are a constant source of pain and medical issues.
