Can a teen understand the consequences of getting a vaccination? Not a problem if parents agree that they should and the teen wants to get the shot.

What about the teen who wants to get the shot but Mom and Dad are anti vaccination parents. Does the state need to step in? Well they would have to if the teen has decided he wants the vaccination but needs consent.

Of course the dilemma is how would the parents take it. Can the teen and the parents have a civil discussion? If the teen so chooses does the parents have a right to deny the decision and say no to getting a vaccination? Or should they let the teen get the vaccination if the teen so choices. The teen is then left with no choice but to get the vaccination if he can and now have to deal with parents who may become angry that there child when against their wishes.

I am going to side with the teen. Parents are going to be disappointed in their kids. Yet Kids have to live their life based on their decisions and make tough choices. They have to deal with life where they will make choices that will affect the rest of their lives. A good learning lesson for what lies ahead for them. Some will work out and some will not. It would be nice to have parents that listen and provide advice. Yet they should also respect the young persons decision even if they do not agree.

That can also work in reverse. There could be a teen who doesn't want to get vaccinated but the parents insist.

Also, what if the teen doesn't want to get vaccinated but the government (which would include schooling) insists?

That doesn't get mentioned in this one-sided article.

Interesting in the article the vaccination issue portrays South Carolina as "pro-choice" for teens without parental consent and California is the opposite (assuming the information in the article is accurate).

Well their is an assumption that the shot provides more benefits than not getting the shot. So if the teen can reasonable construct an argument to not get the shot. He or she should be heard. I would still support their decision even if they do not want to get the shot and they can justify that decision.

Less than 300 people have died of COVID under the age of 20. It is unnecessary for them to get these vaccines. It may in fact be criminal to force them to take any COVID vaccine.

Well that certainly is a good point but still some have died and the vaccination should be used for those at risk. Age should not be the determining factor and hoping for the best. The other side of the coin is what is the harm that would befall them if they got the shot. If there is harm then the doctor should provide advise and recommendations.

There is still the threat of asymptomatic spread of the virus. Assuming that most people have not been vaccination, asymptomatic carriers are still a problem.

It's a good question but under 18's is too broad a spectrum to give a proper opinion that fits all.

For example here in the UK 12/13/14/15/16/17 year old's can make themselves a doctors appointment and doctor/patient confidentiality exists and there's a relationship between them.

In the UK I don't think there would be anything stopping them getting their vaccine if they wanted despite what their parents want (due to the circumstances above).

Seen someone mention deaths above - there's been almost 40-million people vaccinated in the UK for Covid so far and there's been 7 deaths from blood clots from the vaccine.

7 is obviously 7 too many but it's 7 in almost 40-million.

How many lives will them 40-million vaccinations save?

It's irrational, stupid and dangerous to talk about folk dying from the vaccine to make a case for not getting it. Moronic in fact.

The question in hand is still interesting though because I'm the first to say (for example in the Trans debates) how the fuck can a child know what it wants, especially when it comes to a big life-changing decision like changing their sex on feelings that they can't understand or have fully developed - so I kinda loathe to say yeah but it's OK if they can then undermine their parents when it comes to a vaccine. I can't be a hypocrite.

But is it really a fair comparison between a Covid vaccination and a sex change?

Get the vaccine ffs and stop listening to conspiracies and scare stories.

Not just about the kids. If they get it, they will probably survive, but may give it to grandparents or others in high risk. I do not think they should be forced, but it is a serious question and never too early to at least consider what you owe to others in the community.

Nice post. Difficult issue, but well considered.

The word is "advice".

Vaccination for what exactly?

Anti vaxxers generally believe vaccines are unsafe and infringe on their rights. I would imagine they are a very small number but they do exist. So it about any vaccinations ranging from COVID 19 to measles, mumps and rubella

Actually since there is no FDA approved covid vaccine in the world there are no anti vaxxers in this category, just lab rats

Well they have issued a first emergency use authorization in 12/2020 for the vaccine and have extended it recently This allows it to be used.

It allows the vaccine to be used on a voluntary basis, it is fully illegal to require any American to take an experimental vaccine and all of those who did are the equivalent of lab rats.

That's 300 lives that could have been saved with a vaccine. What happened to pro lifers on here. Also your facts are wrong. Over 300 age 17 and under. I think the questions we should be asking ourselves is, how many of those under 17 were asymptomatic carriers and spread it to others that did die, or were at least hospitalized with severe cases of covid? Why do we want a segment of the population to be potential walking covid factories that not only could continue to cause pockets of outbreaks, but could also be carriers of new mutations that limit the effectiveness of current vaccines?
