Short people back then, but yes..seriously cramped quarters!!!!

You'll notice that on all those old sailing ships, walking around the USS Constellation in Baltimore, I had to stoop over everywhere I went below decks, and I'm under 6 ft. tall.

At 5'3" , I was fine, but the hubby at 6'3" was seriously cramped everywhere below deck! !!!!
