True. They faked it 'till they made it. But they were never known as virtuosos on their instruments.
However, there are many esteemed blues/rock/metal guitar virtuosos who could not read standard musical notation, such as Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Ted Nugent, Keith Richards, Freddie King, BB King, EVH and even Jimmy Page, who was a seasoned session musician before his fame.
But what all of those guitarists have in common is that they all had a good understanding of music theory.
