Last month, Donald Trump took office as President of the United States, and I would like to recall his statement about Ukrainian losses, which he made in December 2024:
They (the Ukrainians) have ridiculously lost 400,000 soldiers, and many more civilians.
Therefore, this article deals with the question - What is the reason for deaths of Ukrainian citizens? And the phrase "what is/was the reason for" will be repeated in this material quite often.

The answer to the question posed in the title of the present article should be sought in the events of the so-called Euromaidan, when the oppositionists, who demanded a quicker signing of the association agreement between Ukraine and the EU, began to burn and kill. Although no one in their right mind would burn and kill because of such trifle as a delay in signing some agreement; see the thread "Unnaturalness of the Ukrainian crisis". Therefore, it is completely unclear what the reason for these murders and arson was.

Immediately after the illegal removal of the then President of Ukraine V. Yanukovych from power in February 2014, the Ukrainian parliament did not rush to create a special body to investigate "Yanukovych's corruption", but rushed to repeal the law on regional languages, including Russian. Over the past eleven years, Ukrainians failed to prove that Yanukovych had stolen even a penny, but the deprivation of the Russian language of its regional status led to indignation among millions of ethnic Russians, who were the largest ethnic minority in Ukraine.

And what was the reason for curtailing the rights of millions of ethnic Russians to use their native language in Ukraine?

If the post-Maidan Ukrainian government decided to curtail the rights of ethnic Russians in Ukraine, it was possible to accept the fact that certain regions (primarily the Crimea and Donbass) would either leave Ukraine or have a special status within it.

But instead, in 2021, threats about preparing military measures to “reintegrate the Crimea into Ukraine” were published on the official website of the President of Ukraine. The Ukrainian government also did not comply with the Minsk agreements, the purpose of which was to settle the situation in Donbas.

And what was the reason for the threats to Russia and the reason for the desire to return Donbass under the complete control of Kiev?

In January and February 2022, before the start of the Russian Special Military Operation (SMO), the Russian government was ready to negotiate with the Ukrainian leadership, but Zelensky met during this period with French President Macron, German Chancellor Scholz, British Prime Minister Johnson, Polish President Duda, etc., and also repeatedly called US President Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, etc. However, Zelensky did not make any attempts to reach an agreement with the Russian President.

What was the reason for ignoring the demands of the Russian Federation regarding guarantees of Ukraine’s non-entry into NATO and other demands of Russia?

Attempts to conduct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia were also made after the start of the SMO; in particular, such negotiations took place in Istanbul.

But, as D. Arakhamia, the head of the presidential faction in the Ukrainian parliament, said:
Коли ми повернулися зі Стамбула, приїхав Борис Джонсон до Києва і сказав, що ми взагалі не будемо з ними нічого підписувати – і давайте будемо просто воювати.
After we had returned from Istanbul, Boris Johnson came to Kyiv and said that we would not sign anything with them at all – and let’s just wage the war.

And what was the reason for taking B. Johnson’s statement “let’s just wage the war” seriously, when it was Great Britain that did not fight, and these are Ukrainian citizens who are dying?

Trump exaggerates nearly every number he cites. Last night he repeatedly said the trade deficit with Canada is $200Billion. It's actually only about $80Billion.

It all started after Biden refused to rule out Ukraine's NATO membership, which provoked Putin. Thankfully, Trump's defense secretary clarified this issue to the Russian side. Trump and Putin held a telephone conversation and they agreed to begin negotiations for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump upended three years of U.S. policy toward Ukraine on Wednesday, saying that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to begin negotiations on ending the war following a dramatic prisoner swap.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said earlier Wednesday at NATO headquarters in Brussels that NATO membership was not realistic for Ukraine and said that any security guarantees for the country would have to be borne by European countries.
