I went to a Korean supermarket the other day after private tutoring, and I ran into one of my students who is working there part time. He seemed happy to see me and we had a good chat, but I could tell it was sort of a 'run into your priest in a bar' moment. It's a store I go to often, and I'll look for him next time I'm there. I also know the general manager of the store well, so it's a good chance to build communities and all that sort of thing.

Is he related to the people in the store?

The manager is of course Korean, most of the customers are Asian, and my student as well as a lot of the other people working there are Latino. I am none of the above.

The Chinese-American family of the student I tutored this afternoon was very interested to hear that I was heading to the near-by Korean supermarket after I helped their son with his writing and social studies. A lot of families in the area shop there. Mine as well.

naw, seriously though. I shop at the local asian market occasionally myself. It would definitely be awkward if I met a student there.

But why not? The Irish markets in my area are all super chains anyway. All the big ones. But where's the art in that? Something for everyone, but nothing special. They all look the same and generic.

Spicy chili with chicken, peanuts, and white rice is a pleasant surprise on odd weeks.
