Many republican states were being a little pissy about the nomination process, insisting that nominations had to be formal by August 6th to be included on the ballots. They'd made exemptions from this for both parties, every election cycle for decades.

But this year, they refused for the democrats.

So, to meet this requirement the Dems had a remote count August 1st through Aug 3. With the actual convention on the 19th or so.

And the reason for the convention is the same it always is: to come together, to talk shit about your opponent, to laud yourself, to give the nominee a grand moment to shine.

Well, as of right now, she doesn't even have one delegate. Plus, the can use the convention for free marketing.

So basically the FEC is overseeing (allowing to be used) federal funds that are used for campaigning festivities and events and not so much the process. These are taxpayer supplied, not donor monies. Or, maybe the media hype IS the process. Maybe the matching finds needs to be looked at.
