Is the Australian film industry dominated by the US?
  • This primary evidence supports the statement that the Australian film industry continues to be dominated by the United States, and that locally made films are not as successful as Australian television. The overall dominance of the American film industry in Australia today is due to the popularity, almost by definition, of popular culture.
Seems down under domestic movie and TV industry really suck and they depend on the American industry.
guess they just dont have much talent when it comes to actors and writing skills , but im not surprised when you look at the intelligence and Witt displayed here by Australians , its all probably due to their swollen egos.

I did enjoy Steve Irwin a lot but any thing film or TV wise coming out of down under is very rare.

What about the famous Australian actress, Meryl Streep?

It's because your population is low.

You know why Bollywood puts out more movies, and has thousands of quality actors, and puts out the most movies of any nation?

They have 1.3 Billion people. That's why.

Australians need to marry, and have 10 kids per family. If everyone did that, you could get that population up.

It's real simple. The more population you have, the more people will demand localized (local to the nation) entertainment. And at the same time, you'll have more people that want to do into entertainment, and thus more movie producers, more talented actors, and so on.

As long as Australians have 25 Million people, relative to the US's 330 Million, or India's 1.3 Billion, other nations will consistently produce more entertainment, and higher quality entertainment, relative to the world.

Even South Korea has 50 Million people, and if you haven't noticed, they have produced several extremely well done high quality films.

Time to start having families, and growing the population of Australia. That's the solution.

Population has nothing to with quality and Australian quality sucks

Because the market is 1/12th size of the US's and doesn't have the talent.

Same as in Canada.
it lacks talent but movies sell world wide in the modern world , they lack talent for sure
many stars of our tv shows are Aussies....
thats because they come to America where we have talented writers producers and directors and support staff that dont suck and make AMERICAN MOVIES instead of Australian movies that suck.

Well not directly.... but it does. Because the more people you have, the more money will flow into the industry, and the more resources they will have to invest in improved quality.

If you make a uniquely Australia centric film, that film is going to have a market that is only 25 Million people wide.

You can't spend $100 Million on a film, that with a target audience of only 25 Million, isn't likely to bring in $100 million. In the US spending almost $100 Million on a film... is normal.

And as with any film, a key aspect of quality is of course, the actor talent required. You can't afford big budget actors, with a small budget price.

Steve Carel for example, is being paid $1 Million dollars per episode of Space Force on Netflix.

$1 Million.... per show.

You can't support wages like that, in a market of only 25 Million people.

Which ironically has the perverse effect of causing good Australian actors, to go to Hollywood.

You have to build up that domestic market, to then have the resources flow into the industry, to then gain the acting talent and investment you need, to make high quality films.

And I don't see that happening in a country of barely 25 million people. I don't think it's possible. The market is simply too small.

Mad Max ? The top grossing film franchise of all time

Meanwhile where the future is, streaming Netflix is buying Aussie content left and right.

Um... I count that as TV. If you watch 1 hour to 30 minute shows, that's TV. Stranger things on Netflix, is a TV show.

They are completely different production and delivery models.

Streaming has given the power to the viewer and taken it from the programmer and advertiser.
