I always thought Vincent Price overplayed his roles.

Most movie stars from that era came from theatre, where they had to over-act a little to get the point across to the audience

Indeed.
Those actors GREATLY overacted their roles, to a comical degree.
The horror genre went through a deep/long period of just being flat out terrible.
In the past 10 years or so, horror has elevated to some really good movies, with excellent acting and story lines.

Watched “ Arcadian” (2024) last night ( Nick Cage ) and it was very well done . ( The post Apocalyptic Horror themed films have rails and few films go off of them ( even a little ) so nuanced differences are greatly appreciated .

I agree with your assessment of slasher films. With 2 exceptions. The original Psycho was such a great horror movie. And the original Halloween was as well.
