So excited. My husband will get off duty soon and we're going to have date night. First dinner at Carrabba's and then off to the theater to see the new Alien film Romulus. Looking forward to this. Both me and my husband are huge film buffs. The trailers for it look interesting.

Looks promising, but:
  • No Sigorney Weaver of course, unfortunately.
  • Too many kid actors, no older people.
  • I did not see one big name actor.
  • I saw nothing that wasn't just a resifting of old plot lines.

That's just what this sad world needs, another Alien movie to scare the shit out of us until we're laughing our asses off.

The lack of big name actors usually means a better story since the writers don't have to pander to the star.

Au contraire, IMO as someone who has studied TV and movie production, IMO, the lack of big names usually means smaller budgets because they have less confidence in the film. And you have to HAVE something to pander with before you can be be pandered to, and big names usually GET pandered to because they bring a lot to the fabric of the movie.

As to story, it has been AGES, since I've seen a movie that succeeded on its story alone--- if they HAD an excellent story to begin with, would they be needing to dredge up a 45 year old story line for what--- the FIFTH time?

Reviews by those critics I trust - basically, it returns to the original Alien scope.
As in - More horror than sci-fi, less story focused and more action than the Prometheus/Covenant sequels
They both said - if you like playing the video game Dead Space, creepy-dark suspense followed by wicked violence.. you will love this movie.

I remember when the original Alien came out--- I'm the kind of guy who can watch anything and not get bothered because I always remember it is only a film, not real, but watching Alien, I was in a cold sweat gripping my seat trying not to bite my lip, the horror and suspense were so real, sometimes it was hard to watch and I was almost relieved when it was finally over!

Even when nothing was happening, your guts were in a knot (like when they found the egg nursery in the bowels of the ship) because you just knew something real bad was going to happen!

I think a big part of that was the relatable characters. They made jokes during down time, were serious during serious times. Like normal humans.

No sudden bouts of "godly intelligence and knowledge". No characters that make no sense and would rationally want to kick their own asses.

New movies just generally suck overall. Vehicles for CGI. Characters written with the depth and nuance of being written by a 6 year old.

If I see another movie where the head scientist or head spaceship pilot (jobs that would require serious, hyper educated people) has the personality of the dreadlocked bartender at the local gastro pub after 5 shots of tequila, I think I will puke.

Please someone tell me this movie isn't like this.

I liked the movie, they did a nice job of paying homage to Alien, Aliens and Prometheus.

The story line was fine, with a couple big holes but over all a very enjoyable movie

Looks promising, but:

  • I saw nothing that wasn't just a resifting of old plot lines.

I am becoming a big fan of Cailee Spaeny. She was good in Civil War and this movie

I just saw it !!
I loved the intensity and so spooky scary !!
Also the slight Roman mythology was interesting.

Romulus is very good
It takes place right after the original but it pulls from alien and Prometheus

Story is compelling about friendship, survival , corruption , creation with Roman mythology

Saw it with my wife last night and we both agreed.

It started out good but got dumber as it went, especially after the half way mark.

Waaayyyyy too much fan service. There were constant references to the old movies and it was distracting, kept snapping me out of the moment and think about other movies. The constant references seemed lazy and hacky.

They forced your attention on too many things but they didn't make them make any sense.

None of the music stood out.

None of the characters seemed written very well and all were pretty much throw away. Andy was the only one we liked, he was written well.

But we did like how it really captured the look and feel of the original and did a great of that 70s and 80s futuristic sci-fi feel where everything was advanced but still had an analog feel to it. The sets were great. We liked the basic story idea and how it didn't need to be a sequel.

Just it felt like a alien super fan got his chance to make a movie and was too excited. Was a good effort but wasn't enough I'd care to watch it again. We were entertained for 90 minutes and enjoyed it but didn't love it. Was disappointed to see huge potential not fully brought out

Id be disappointed if she was in it. Not every franchise needs to hang on one character.

And they were all young because that's what fit into the storyline of it.

Just because someone is no name doesn't mean they can't be good. Every great actor started out as no one. Besides, I get sick of seeing big name actors all the time, the majority of them today aren't any good.

Yep. They usually write movies starting with the beginning and ending, then fill in the middle. Sounds like they are out of material and this was done purely to make some money for a dying studio that is trying to milk old successful franchises yet of another few bucks.
